HomeMy WebLinkAboutBHPCMinutes_2021_02_11Brookings Historic Preservation Commission February 11, 2021 Minutes A meeting of the Brookings Historic Preservation Commission was held on Thursday, February 11, 2021 in City Hall. Members present: Jessica Garcia -Fritz and Matthew Weiss. Members attending virtually: Janet Merriman and Greg Heiberger. Angie Boersma, Janet Gritzner and Tom Thaden were absent. Also present Mike Struck, Community Development Director and Ryan Miller, City Planner via virtual meeting. Chairperson Garcia -Fritz called the meeting to order at 6:07 p.m. A motion was made by Weiss and seconded by Merriman to approve the agenda as amended with an update on the Public Arts Commission. All present voted yes, motion carried. Motion by Merriman, seconded by Weiss to approve the minutes from January 14, 2021 meeting. All present voted yes, motion carried. Updates on 11.1 Review. Struck provided an update on 809 9th Street. State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) agreed with the applicant on the removal of the non-contributing building will not encroach upon, damage, or destroy historic properties listed in the National or State Registers of Historic Places. Struck updated the commission on a potental project gong through the 11.1 Review process at 4114th Street. Discussion on 2021 Goals. Struck provided a draft of 2021 BHPC Goals. The goals are: Complete the Brookings Historic Preservation Plan Update Finish out grant program with the installation of plaques in the University District Encourage usage of the 11.1 Contractor's Guide as a resource for contractors and homeowners Conduction public education activities as required by the CLG Grant including: walking tours, historical trolley tours, Mayor's Awards, social media outreach and other events as resources allow Begin implementation strategies of Historic Preservation Plan Discussion ensued on expanding the fourth goal to utilize social media to reach the public as part of the educational component. Various activities to include Facebook, yonward app, potential of video walking tours of historic districts, etc. Subcommittee Discussion/Project Updates. Special Projects: Current project is the University District plaques. Thaden & Gritzner have been working on this but pandemic slowed progress. Public Relations: Committee members are Boersma, Gritzner, and Thaden. Public Education: Committee members are Merriman, Heiberger, and Weiss. Public Arts Commission Representative. Public Arts Commission meets quarterly on the first Thursday of the month at noon. Commission discussed availability of members to serve on the Public Arts Commission. BHPC inquired as to whether or not the BHPC representative could rotate based on availability of schedules. Future Meeting Schedule & Time Next meeting is scheduled for March 11, 2021 at 6:00 p.m. Motion by Weiss, seconded by Merriman to adjourn at 7:00 p.m. h Jessica 9 rcia- 'tz, hairperson Mike Struck, Community Development Director
