Sustainability Council Meeting Minutes

1. Call to Order

4. Open Forum
At this time, any member of the public may request time on the agenda for an item not
listed. Items are not typically scheduled for the end of the meeting; however, very brief
announcements of invitations will be allowed at this time.
5. City Update - Josh Bauman
● Police facility open house
● Aldi opening on the 20th
● Mayors Awards Dec. 3rd @ 5pm
6. Update: Budget - Josh Bauman
● Budget $2,439 Remaining
○ Will use this to order already-approved Food Forest signage and plant material.
7. Strategic Plan Updates
● Reviewed the document as a group, and mutually agreed on a few minor changes to
reflect any necessary updates.

8. BSC Holiday Potluck
● Taking place in the classroom at The Dakota Nature Park, 4p.m. on December 10th.
9. Follow Ups From Last Meeting
● Food forest signage:
○ E. Abele motions to approve the purchase of the three (3) approx. 18” x 24”
aluminum signs for Food Forest (to be considered “other enhancements”).

10. Updates/Reports from Subcommittees
a. Education and Outreach
● No Updates.
○ R. Buterbaugh: The Brookings Beacon - new online newspaper. Potential avenue
for sustainability-related promotions?
b. Climate (Biodiversity) - Lead Vacant
● No Updates.
○ R. Buterbaugh: green space mapping to help with Bee City?
c. Waste
● No Updates.
d. Energy
● No Updates.
e. Local Foods
● R. Buterbaugh: Idea relating to economic relief/producing own local food - Give away
bulk seeds easy to grow and promote food security within the community. Have a
reserve on hand in the future of uncertainty.
11. Updates from LIaisons
a. Parks and Recreation Board - Stephen Hartung
i. Wrapped up tree planting for the year, back to emerald ash borer treating.
ii. Meeting with Downtown Brookings and Norm’s to discuss intersection bumpouts
landscaping Downtown.
iii. East side of Library being offered for landscaping/native planting/demonstration
plots
