HomeMy WebLinkAboutSCMinutes_2025_10_08City of Brookings Sustainability Council Meeting Minutes Wednesday, September 10th, 2025, 4:00 PM City/County Government Center; Room 300 Sustainability Council Members: Anthony Shanks, Louis Hesler, Albert Patin, Robin Buterbaugh, Emily Abele, Kiley Rath, Kyle Jamison, Conner Evers, Alicia Heich, and SDSU Student Representative Madalynn Graham, City Staff: Joshua Bauman Assistant Parks, Recreation & Forestry Director 1. Call to Order T. Shanks 2. Approval of the Agenda Motion to Approve: M. Graham Second: A. Patin Aye: All Opposed: None 3. Approval of Minutes Motion to Approve: A. Patin Second: K. Jamison Aye: All Opposed: None 4. Open Forum At this time, any member of the public may request time on the agenda for an item not listed. Items are not typically scheduled for the end of the meeting; however, very brief announcements of invitations will be allowed at this time. ● Two SDSU students Nutrition and Dietetics Majors ○ How can we work together to tackle plastic waste in our community? ○ Discussed Senate Bill 54 in SD that bans the future banning of plastics locally. ○ Get local businesses to donate things they already have that are sustainable (ex. Promotional tote bags) ○ We will stay in touch and work together moving forward. 5. City Update - Josh Bauman ● Budget $7,808 total - $3,709.12 Remaining ● No applications received for the Sustainability Council - November 3rd is the date to get recommendations to City Clerk ● Johnny Mays from Missouri named the new Deputy City Manager ● New fire station to go on PD land ● PRF still has over $10,000 left in the Urban Forestry Initiative program ● Solid Waste Department had a booth at the Fall Classic to promote their composting pilot program ● Planned burn at the DNP next week, weather permitting 6. Patin: Motion for council to spend up to $2000 to for plant material and other enhancements for Brookings Community Food Forest: Second: K. Jamison Aye: All Opposed: None 7. Update: City Council Retreat - October 15th, 6pm 8. Strategic Plan Updates ● Review during next meeting. 9. Follow Ups From Last Meeting ● Food forest signage: ○ E. Abele motions to approve the purchase of the three (3) approx. 18” x 24” aluminum signs for Food Forest (to be considered “other enhancements”). ■ Second: A. Patin Aye: All Opposed: None 10. Updates/Reports from Subcommittees a. Education and Outreach ● K. Rath: Social Media Posts ○ No updates as sustainability-related posts will be going out from the City monthly for the rest of the year. b. Climate (Biodiversity) - Lead Vacant ● No Updates. c. Waste ● No Updates. d. Energy ● No Updates. e. Local Foods ● J. Bauman: in talks about which plants to order to utilize last meeting’s motion for up to $2000 in plant material and other food forest enhancements. ● “Thank you” to our sponsors in Kiosk. 11.
