HomeMy WebLinkAboutSCMinutes_2021_11_10City of Brookings Sustainability Council Meeting Minutes Wednesday, November 10, 2021 4:00 PM Virtual Sustainability Council Members: Darcy Green, VACANT, Ben Vukovich, Louis Hesler, Albert Patin, Norma Nusz Chandler, Jennifer McLaughlin, Robin Buterbaugh, Betty Beer, Emily Abele, Anna Barr, and SDSU Student Representative Samuel Krueger. City Staff: Jacob Meshke, Assistant City Manager, Paul Briseno. 1. Call to Order 2. Approval of the Agenda Motion: A. Patin Second: N. Nusz-Chandler 3. Approval of the Minutes Motion: A. Patin Second: N. Nusz-Chandler 4. Open Forum Introduction of new Student representative, Samuel Krueger 5. Guest Speaker - Robin Buterbaugh, City/County Rain Garden Project City/county building site 364,000 gallons of runoff per year For this project, put in earth berm with stone protection, stone channel with underdrain pipe, and put in native plants around the channel to help handle the higher water amounts. Specific plants used based on plant characteristics and ecological benefits. 6. City Update Passed budget plan for city yesterday Rezoning happening at new interchange – think about walkability of communities - Think about greenspace requirements and sustainability options Park master plan accepted 2 weeks ago Working on bike master plan and working on increasing trails Got first plug in hybrid car; looking at getting biodiesel in the future 7. Future Sustainability Council Leadership (Chair and Vice Chair) Will do elections at next meeting – think about if any of these positions would be right for you. Chair: Runs the meetings, is main contact for city, included in all city emails, doing interviews, is go to person for all things sustainability, go to person to present to city council (estimate 5-10 hours per month) Vice Chair: Helps with running the meetings in Chair’s absence, organizing administrative duties Minutes taker: Recording basics and details of meetings 8. Discussion and Possible Action on 2021 Budget - Signs for reducing waste ($385 for 100 signs) and table toppers: Vote to approve up to $1500. - Motion: L. Hesler Second: E. Abele - Sign for retention garden: Robin will get quote and send out graphics by email 9. Updates/Reports from Subcommittees a. Marketing and Communication: Putting out recycling ad on 11/15, one from Energy conservation subcommittee, and then a couple for Christmas. Mayor’s award coming on 12/2, 5-8pm – need someone to present – let Jennifer know by the end of the week if you want to do this. b. Waste: No updates. c. Energy: Working on energy conservation ad. Meetings monthly currently with BMU and Dr. McTaggert d. Local Foods: Survey results back for Community Gardens location expansion: Results 31 respondents; transportation not a huge barrier, but big interest in additional smaller community gardens (77%). Variety of locations respondents interested in. 10. Updates from Liaisons a. Bicycle Committee: No updates b. Human Rights Comm ission: Training session in last month.
