Wednesday July 10, 2019
A meeting of the Brookings Sustainability council was held Wednesday, July 10, 2019 at the Brookings
City & County government Center at 4:00 pm with the following members.
Present: Robert McGrath, Paul Peterson, Norma Nusz‐Chandler, Jennifer
McLaughlin, Stephanie Aure, Robin Buterbaugh, Nels Granholm. City Staff: Jacob Meshke
Absent: Jane Hegland, Betty Beer and Shelly Brandenburger.
I. The meeting was called to order by chair Jennifer McLaughlin at 4:00 pm.
II. Agenda approval; motion to approve Robert M./Stephanie A. – passed.
III. Minutes from June 12th meeting; motion to approve with no changes Norm C./Bob M. – passed.
IV. Solid Waste Management Director: Todd Langland
a. Topics discussed during meeting
i. Food Composting: state requirements update: review again in 2021
ii. Trial: Roll off grass collection at Community gardens.
iii. Future (2020) Citizens Campus at landfill [Grass/Branch drop off] open to public
for drop‐off after landfill hours.
iv. Landfill scheduled for Methane testing again in 2020.
v. Current landfill expectation is to 2070.
V. Mayor Awards
a. Total nominations were for Carrot Seed, SDSU local foods, SDSU Marshall Solar Array
(late nomination was motioned and approved Bob M./Paul P. to be included) results
were as follows;
i. Environmental Resiliency Award nominated by Bob M/Norma C.
1. – SDSU Marshall Solar Array. – Jennifer M. to assist with article
ii. Social/Quality of Life. ‐Nominated by Paul P/Bob M.
1. ‐ Carrot Seed ‐ Shelly B. to assist with article
VI. Topic from last meeting regarding fire department coverage.
a. Letter from local fire chief was distributed and discussed. No additional action
VII. City Request
a. Downtown recycling bin Trial
b. 4 bins are in use now (summer trial)
c. Todd Langland to follow‐up with Parks dept. regarding bins for Downtown @ Sundown.
VIII. Student application for this council has been received, but not brought to meeting.
IX. Updates/reports with Sub‐committees
a. Solid Waste: Subcommittee has been asked to look at a plastic bag ban. Bob McGrath
will be sending out to entire Sustainability Council to review for topic at next meeting.
Energy: No new update
b. Local Foods: Working on identifying city ordinance that complicate growing items in the
city of Brookings.
c. Marketing & Communication: No new update.
X. Motion to Adjourn (~5:20 pm) by Jennifer M/ Norma C. – approved.
