HomeMy WebLinkAboutSCMinutes_2019_03_13Brookings Sustainability Council Meeting Minutes March 13, 2019 A meeting of the Brookings Sustainability council was held Wednesday, March 13, 2019 at the Brookings City & County government Center, room 241 with the following members. Present: Mike Lockrem, Robert McGrath, Paul Peterson, Norma Nusz‐Chandler, Jennifer McLaughlin, Robin Buterbaugh, Shelly Brandenburger, McKinely Lain, Nels Granholm. City Staff: Angie Ritter/Paul Briseno, Absent: Jane Hegland, Betty Beer, and Stephanie Aure I. The meeting was called to order by chair Jennifer McLaughlin at 4:03 pm. II. New committee student member was recognized with welcome: McKinley Lain. III. Minutes from Feb. 13 meeting; motion to approve with no changes Mike L./Norm C. – passed. IV. Agenda approval; motion to approve Robert M./Norma C. – passed. V. Updates/reports with Sub-committees a. Solid Waste: Bob McGrath handed out one (1) page summary of subcommittee meeting. Detailed committee topic areas (Added recycle to public areas, encourage business recycle, public education, and waste research topics). b. Energy: Jennifer McLaughlin update that the Energy group met with City Engineering Dept. for initial discussion on energy topic and the committee. c. Local Foods: Shelly Brandenburger updated group that there is an upcoming meeting at the Public Library regarding the potential of a food Co-op in Brookings. d. Marketing & Communication: Jennifer & Mike L. asked the group for any ideas for social media post to please funnel to them. VI. Children’s Museum wants to hosting Sustainability Speaker, looking for sponsorship. a. Target Speaker: Stephanie Arne to speak on sustainability b. Motion by Shelly B./Bob M. to fund $500 to help sponsor Ste phanie Arne event. – passed by committee. VII. Update from committee Liaisons. a. Water i. Friends of the Big Sioux River – Nels G. ii. The organization is Dr. Catherin Zeman to Augustana University 3/21 to present on Nitrates in our water supply. b. Bike committee i. No new comments c. Other Events i. SDSU Lights-out event - March 30. ii. SDSU “Vang” immigrant farming play – April 1. VIII. Motion to Adjourn (~5:15 pm) – Paul P/ Norma C. Respectfully submitted, Paul L. Peterson
