July 11, 2024
MEETING MINUTES
The Board of Trustees of the Brookings Public Library met on Thursday, July 11 at 12:00 pm in the Historical Room at the
Brookings Public Library.
MEMBERS PRESENT: Brittany Shaw, Kathy Miller, Linda Richter, Mark Binkley
OTHERS PRESENT: Ashia Gustafson, Shane Andreasen, Jacob Meshke
1. Call to Order
Brittany Shaw called the meeting to order.
2. Approval of Agenda
Brittany Shaw approved the meeting agenda with no changes.
3. Approval of Minutes
Brittany Shaw approved the meeting minutes from June 20, 2024
4. Public Comment on Items not on the Agenda
5. Old Business
5.1 Continuing Education Report
Ashia Gustafson reviewed the continuing education report with the Library Board members. The South Dakota Library
Association annual conference is September 26 & 27 and any board member attending can earn additional credits.
6. New Business
6.1 Approval of Bills
The Library Board members reviewed the June 2024 bills, budgets, and expenditures. Kathy Miller moved to approve. Mark
Binkley seconded. Motion carried.
6.2 Historical Collection Policy
Ashia Gustafson reviewed the Historical Collection Policy with the Library Board. No changes were proposed.
7. Other Items & Reports
7.1 Financial Report
Ashia Gustafson presented the review of the 2024 budget through June to the Library Board members.
7.2 Librarian’s Report
472 people attended the Transportation Fair on Wednesday, June 26. The 605 Magic Art Bus saw 344 participants. 912
children and 128 teens have signed up for summer reading programs. Approximately 200 adults are participating in the summer
reading program. Teen programs are seeing substantial growth in attendance including 157 teens attending 10 different
programs in June. The Missing and Murdered Indigenous Persons grant funded June’s book club on “Highway of Tears” by
Jessica McDiarmid which brought in 12 participants. The next MMIP event will be on July 23 and it will be on the intersection
between MMIP and domestic violence with presenter Brenda Hill from the National Indigenous Women’s Resource Center.
Midstates AV has ordered the parts for a PA system with installation likely in August or September. Maker Lab programs have
been well attended. The Circulation Manager position interviews will begin July 31. Another part-time employee will be
interviewed and hired soon. Midwest Glass has begun replacing windows throughout the library. There is currently no final
installation date so it is unknown if the project will span into the following fiscal year.
8. Next Meeting: Thursday, August 15 at 12:00 PM in the Historical Room of the Brookings Public Library.

The Library Board meeting adjourned at 12:23pm.
