BOARD OF TRUSTEES
February 15, 2024
MEETING MINUTES
The Board of Trustees of the Brookings Public Library met on Thursday, February 15 at 12:00 pm in Cooper Room A at the
Brookings Public Library.
MEMBERS PRESENT: Brittany Shaw, Denise Hall, Kathy Miller, Mark Binkley
OTHERS PRESENT: Ashia Gustafson, Jacob Meshke, Toby Olsen, Shane Andreasen
1. Call to Order
Brittany Shaw called the meeting to order.
2. Approval of Agenda
Brittany Shaw approved the meeting agenda with no changes.
3. Approval of Minutes
Brittany Shaw approved the meeting minutes from January 11, 2024
4. Remodel Proposal Update: Toby Olsen OPN Architects
Toby Olsen of OPN Architects presented various library remodel proposals to the board members and discussed a variety of
topics surrounding the proposals.

No members of the public present at meeting.

7.1 Approval of Bills
The Library Board members reviewed the January 2024 bills, budgets, and expenditures. Kathy Miller moved to approve. Mark
Binkley seconded. Motion carried.
7.2 Inclement Weather Closure Policy
The Inclement Weather Closure Policy is currently under review by other city staff and will be reviewed by the library board
members at a future library board meeting.
8. Other Items & Reports
8.1 Librarian’s Report
Children’s Music Maker and Story Time events begin again. Spy School started in January and continues this month with codes
and ciphers. The Tween Book Club book is 15 Secrets of Survival and the club has been well attended. Staff is busy planning
for the Children’s Summer Reading Program entitled “Adventure.” The Reel Reads Book Club began in February with a showing
of the film The Hate U Give. Teens will watch a movie together, have time to read the book the film is based on, and then
discuss the book at a future meeting. Teens in the Kitchen plan to meet at The Carrot Seed to learn how to make focaccia
bread. Members of the TAB (Teen Advisory Board) put up Black History Month and Valentine’s Day displays. The Teen
Advisory Board will open to general member in February. The adult program around cooking pheasant was extremely well
received and many attendees asked when the next class would be. The Murder Mystery Game had 57 attendees over 3 days.
Black History Month Programming has seen lower attendance, but is going well, and there are more presentations coming up in
February. The public library is partnering with the SDSU English Department for their Community Read of the book Killers of the
Flower Moon by David Grann. 48 copies of the book have been donated to circulate and distribute. There will be two discussion
events at SDSU; one on February 27 and one on March 19. There will be a film screening of Killers of the Flower Moon on
March 27th at Cinema 8 and a David Grann lecture and book signing on April 5 at SDSU. Hoopla is being added as an e-
resource for our community in March 2024. Hoopla hosts a wide variety of e-books, e-audiobooks, music, movies, magazines,
and television shows for free circulation to library patrons. Each patron will receive a set limit of checkouts per month as the
library will be charged on a per-checkout basis for each item. Nancy Swenson will be attending the American Library
Association (ALA) event representing the South Dakota Library Association (SDLA) with one other SDLA representative. This
event is an opportunity for library advocates across the country to present their local stories regarding the importance of federal
funding for library programs and services. Shirts are available from the Friends of the Library t-shirt contest. The FOL receives a
portion of each sale and they have reported raising around $132.00 so far. Anyone can place an order through the Bonfire
website, https://www.bonfire.com/store/friends-of-the-brookings-public-library/, and the merchandise will ship directly to the
patron.
8.2 Financial Report
Ashia Gustafson presented the review of the 2024 budget through January to the Library Board members.
8.3 Comment on items not on the agenda
Ashia Gustafson reported that the SDSU architecture students will present their library remodel projects in the City Council
Chambers during the first week of April 2024.
