December 15, 2022
MEETING MINUTES
The Board of Trustees of the Brookings Public Library met on Thursday, December 15 at 12:00 pm via Zoom.
MEMBERS PRESENT: Kathy Miller, Stephanie Carroll, Linda Richter, Doug O’Neill, Denise Hall
OTHERS PRESENT: Nita Gill, Shane Andreasen, Katherine Eberline
1. Call to Order
Kathy Miller called the meeting to order.
2. Approval of Agenda
Kathy Miller approved the meeting agenda with no changes added.
3. Approval of Minutes
Kathy Miller approved the Library Board meeting minutes from November 17, 2022 with no changes or corrections added.

5.1 Meet the Staff: Katherine Eberline Children’s Services Coordinator
Katherine Eberline introduced herself and gave a brief history of her service. She described some of the different programs
offered at the library for children including reading programs, STEAM programs, puppet shows, interactive movie night, ukulele
classes, and more. She described the upgrades to the story time room including a sound system for puppet shows with
individual microphones for performers and a new theatre projector for better video integration with programs.
5.2 Approval of Bills
Linda Richter moved to approve the bills. Doug O’Neill seconded. Motion carried.
5.3 Approval of Library Close Days 2023
Denise Hall moved to approve the library close days 2023. Stephanie Carroll seconded. Motion carried.
5.4 Public Printing and Copying
Nita Gill explained that the Friends of the Library currently handle printer and copier maintenance and this proposal is to transfer
the fund tracking responsibility to the Library Board. Doug O’Neill wanted to know more about the copier rental fees and cost to
fix machines when they break down. Stephanie Carroll noted that the memo included with the proposal states that the revenue
covers the cost of the copier rental and supplies. Kathy Miller motioned to approve the public printing and copying proposal.
Stephanie Carroll seconded. Motion carried.
5.6 Proposed 2023 Fines Budget
Linda Richter asked for clarification regarding the UMS expense. Nita Gill explained that UMS is a collection agency used for
retrieving unreturned items and collecting funds for unreturned materials. Linda Richter motioned for approval. Doug O’Neill
seconded. Motion carried.
6. Other Items & Reports
6.1 Financial Report
Nita Gill presented the review of the 2022 budgets through November to the Library Board members.
6.2 Librarian’s Report
Nita reported on various library activities. The interactive movie was a success. Upgrades to the children’s story time room have
been helpful with programming. 14 patrons attended the graphic novel book club at the middle school and they requested to
meet more frequently than monthly. The young adult ugly sweater craft ornaments event is coming up December 19. An escape
room challenge for young adults is in the planning stages. Mikaela Neubauer hosted events for Native American Heritage month
but one event will be rescheduled as the presenter was unable to travel the day of her presentation. The Brookings Disability
Awareness Committee is giving the library $300 to purchase accessibility items for the Maker Lab. The company that operates
the library website is working with Nancy Swenson to update and refresh the library’s webpage. The library decorated a tree for
the Brookings Arts Council Festival of Trees.
