BOARD OF TRUSTEES
May 12, 2022
MEETING MINUTES
The Board of Trustees of the Brookings Public Library met on Thursday, May 12, 2022 at 12:03 pm in the Historical Room at the
Brookings Public Library.
MEMBERS PRESENT: Kathy Miller, Doug O’Neill (via phone), Stephanie Carroll, Linda Richter
OTHERS PRESENT: Ashia Gustafson, Nita Gill, Jen Anderson, and Cherylann Ganci
1. Call to Order
Kathy Miller called the meeting to order.
2. Approval of Agenda
Kathy Miller called for approval of the meeting agenda. Linda Richter moved to approve the meeting agenda with the addition of
6.2 Funding for Festival of Books. Doug O’Neill seconded. Motion carried.
3. Approval of Minutes
Kathy Miller called for approval of the minutes from the April 14, 2022 meeting. Doug O’Neill moved to approve the meeting
minutes. Linda Richter seconded. Motion carried.
4. Old Business
4.1 Board Continuing Education Hours
Ashia Gustafson presented the Library Board members with the current record of continuing education hours (46 hours of 45).
5. New Business
5.1 Meet the Staff: Nita Gill – Adult Services Librarian
Nita Gill was introduced to the Library Board members and explained her background as a Librarian. Nita Gill assists patrons
with reference questions and organizes the Historical Room. She orders Library materials for the adult readers as well as
eBooks and eAudiobooks. A challenge she has is keeping up with the Library trends throughout the year and ordering what
patrons want to read.
5.2 Approval of Bills
The Library Board members discussed the April 2022 bills, budgets and expenditures. Linda Richter moved to approve the April
2022 bills. Doug O’Neill seconded. Motion carried.
5.3 Mother’s Room Policy
Ashia Gustafson presented the Mother’s Room Policy to the Library Board members. Mother’s room is now completed and
ready for public usage. News on the Mother’s Room was in the City Council Progress Report, and soon to be in the newspaper
and radio. Stephanie Carroll moved to approve the Mother’s Room Policy. Linda Richter seconded. Motion carried.
5.4 Community Bulletin Board Policy
Ashia Gustafson presented the Community Bulletin Board and Pamphlet Policy to the Library Board members. Posters and
pamphlets must be approved by the Library Director before displaying in the Library. Linda Richter moved to approve the
additional information to the Community Bulletin Board and Pamphlet Policy. Stephanie Carroll seconded. Motion carried.
5.5 Circulation Policy
Ashia Gustafson presented the Circulation Policy to the Library Board members. Updated the Circulation Policy with mentors’
cards and added yard games to circulation. The Library Board members discussed the updates. Stephanie moved to approve
the updates to the Circulation Policy. Doug O’Neill seconded. Motion carried.
6. Other Items & Reports
6.1 Financial Report
Ashia Gustafson presented the review of the 2022 budget through April to the Library Board members. The Library Board
members discussed the budget.
6.2 Funds for Festival of Books
Ashia Gustafson asked the Library Board members if they would like to sponsor the Festival of Books coming to Brookings, SD.
Friends of the Brookings Public Library is thinking about sponsoring and the Library could partner with them. The Library Board
members discussed the Festival of Books. Kathy Miller moved to match funds with the Friends of the Brookings Public Library
up to $2,500. Linda Richter seconded. Motion carried.
6.3 Librarian’s Report
Ashia Gustafson presented the monthly report to the Library Board members. Maker space is coming together and
programming to start soon. Summer reading programs registrations will start up next week. Two garden beds were placed on
the east side of the Library and will have wildflowers planted this month.
7. Public Comment on Items not on Agenda
Cherylann Ganci was present during the Library Board meeting. She is a big fan of Libraries and moved to Brookings two years
ago. Cherylann Ganci would like to see how the Library works as an outreach for the community and be involved with the
Library. Ashia Gustafson provided information about what the Library Board members do for the Library as well as volunteer
options.
8. Next Meeting: Thursday, June 16 at 12:00 PM in the Historical Room
9. Adjournment
Linda Richter moved to adjourn the meeting. Stephanie Carroll seconded. The meeting adjourned at 12:46 pm.
