Public Arts Commission
Minutes
Tues. June 10, 2025
The Public Arts Commission held a meeting on June 10 at 12:00 pm at the Brookings City &
County Government Center, Room 241.
Members present: Linda Purrington, Betty Beer, Lisbeth Solum, Meridith Weiland, - Carson and
Kate Treiber. City Staff: Stacy Clausen, Recreation Manager.
Members absent: Abigail Ramsbottom, Jamison Lamp
City Staff Absent: Kristin Zimmerman, Josh Bauman
• Agenda Review – Linda Purrington
Ammendment to the Agenda - Purrington
Motion to approve: Weiland, 2nd – Beer
Motion approved by unanimous vote.
• Approval of Minutes: Purrington, 2nd – Beer
• Old Business
a. Discussion and action on election of New Chairman and inclusion of Vice Chair.
Weiland moved Solum as Chairman. Purrington – 2nd.
Motion approved by unanimous vote.
Solum made a motion to approve We iland as Vice Chairman. Purrington – 2nd.
Motion approved by unanimous vote.
b. Committee Reports:
3rd Floor City/County Building Committee: Betty sent email to Commission
members. Total cost for the display will be $300.00 for prints and framing. Betty will
meet with the building advisors. A final decision will be made at the Aug. meeting.
Mural Downtown Brookings Committee: no update available.
Skateboard Park Committee: no progress made. Committee is waiting to see the
finalized plan before contacting the artist. Paula Carson will work with Josh on this.
Committee will meet and have plan by Aug. meeting.
Nature Park Sculpture Committee: committee has met several times to discuss
criteria for sculpture. Lisbeth Solum presented a computer rendering of the area for
use by the committee. Stacy Clausen has taken pictures of the area as well for the
RFP. Discussion of a $38,000 price was discussed with more money from next year
added. Electricity is on site and committee will work with the city on that part of the
project. Committee will meet prior to the Aug. meeting to put together an RFP.
Update on Hillcrest Project: Chairman Purrington has been in contact with the
school. A deadline of July 1st was given this project to proceed. The school’s wish is
for an outdoor classroom for disabled or neuro-divergent students. A question was
brought up about serving only a portion of the student population. Discussion will
resume at next meeting if proposal and pictures are delivered to us by the July 1st
deadline.
Update on Pickleball Court Wind Screen Repair: after a lot of back and forth this
project has been completed. The wind screen was not installed where the
commission had directed, however Stacy Clausen indicated that this is where the
pickleball players want it.
• New Business: South Dakota’s Poet Laureate spoke to Betty Beer about gifting his bust
for display in Brookings. Committee tabled this item until August.
• Date of next full meeting: Aug. 12th at 12pm at the City/County Government Center.
