HomeMy WebLinkAboutBHPCMinutes_2025_05_08Brookings Historic Preservation Commission May 8, 2025 Minutes A meeting of the Brookings Historic Preservation Commission was held on Thursday, May 8, 2025 in the Brookings City & County Government Center. Members present: Janet Gritzner, Janet Merriman, Tom Thaden, Sandra Callies, Nathaniel Condelli, Paula Carson, Audra Fullerton, and Samuel Krueger. Also present was Ryan Miller, City Planner. Call to Order Merriman called the meeting to order at 6:05 p.m. Approval of Agenda Added to the agenda was a discussion regarding a South Dakota State University Sustainability Committee report. A motion was made by Carson and seconded by Thaden to approve the agenda as amended. All present voted aye. Approval of Minutes A motion was made by Gritzner and seconded by Krueger to approve the April 10, 2025 minutes as. All present voted aye. Other Items & Reports a. Subcommittee Updates i. Survey No update. ii. Public Education Carson hosted a couple of tours of the Central District for OLLI Adult Education. iii. Codes & Design Callies mentioned that they will begin preparing a power point for the survey. Callies mentioned that the subcommittee wants to look at design standards for the districts. iv. Incentives & Partnerships Callies mentioned a desire to look into a program similar to the Sioux Falls program. b. Brochures Distribution Updates Carson mentioned that another batch will soon be distributed to Watertown. c. Preservation Month Planning Thaden has articles on the Midland Bank and 1921 Building for the paper to publish. The scavenger hunt is in progress. The library display is up. Callies mentioned that the open house is set for Thursday May 29 @ ID8 Architecture. Merriman will host a table describing the 11.1 review process. Miller will be present. d. Block Party Planning Callies stated the street closure permit is ready to submit. The block party will be held on Saturday, June 28. Set up will begin at 3 pm. e. Trolley Ride Planning The Downtown at Sundown dates are not yet posted. A date will be selected to coincide with one of those dates. f. SDSU Sustainability Committee Report Gritzner mentioned that the South Dakota State Sustainability Committee met on May 6. There was discussion about a number of buildings that are not on the national register and they are possibility interested in pursing registrations. Merriman asked if it would be appropriate to offer assistance. Gritzner thought it would be appropriate and that this could be discussed further at the next meeting. Upcoming Events None Other Announcements Miller mentioned that new SHPO Reginal Rep Maddie Ferrell will join the July Brookings Historic Preservation Commission meeting. Merriman asked how the budget is doing. Miller mentioned that the BHPC will be coming in under budget due to no expenses towards conferences or welcome packets. Condelli mentioned that he will be resigning from the BHPC in order to focus on an Educational Doctorate program. Next Scheduled Meeting  The next meeting will be Thursday, June 12, 2025.
