HomeMy WebLinkAboutBHPCMinutes_2025_01_09Brookings Historic Preservation Commission January 9, 2025 Minutes A meeting of the Brookings Historic Preservation Commission was held on Thursday, January 9, 2025 in the Brookings City & County Government Center. Members present: Janet Gritzner, Janet Merriman, Matthew Weiss, Tom Thaden, Sandra Callies, Nathaniel Condelli, Diane Kosbau and Samual Krueger via phone. Also present was Ryan Miller, City Planner. Call to Order Weiss called the meeting to order at 6:04 p.m. Approval of Agenda A motion was made by Merriman and seconded by Condelli to approve the agenda. All present voted aye. Approval of Minutes A motion was made by Merriman and seconded by Thaden to approve the November 14, 2024 minutes. All present voted aye. 2025 Chair & Vice Chair Nominations / Selections Merriman stated that the nominating committee would like to nominate Matt Weiss for Chair and Janet Merriman for Vice Chair. A motion was made by Merriman and seconded by Krueger to approve the nominations of Matt Wiess for Chair and Janet Merriman for Vice Chair. All present voted aye. 11.1 Review & State Case Report Updates No updates. Other Items & Reports. a. Subcommittee Updates: i. Survey Gritzner is working on dates of construction for structures in the area. Gritzner will provide Miller with a list to research dates of construction. ii. Public Education Merriman continues Facebook activity for BHPC. iii. Codes & Design Weiss mentioned that the latest subcommittee meeting was held in December. The subcommittee will reconvene shortly. iv. Incentives & Partnerships Condelli noted that the new downtown incentive programs are open. The deadline to apply for the Façade and DRIP programs is March 1. b. City Council Retreat: Miller mentioned that a date has not yet been set for the Council Retreat. c. CLG Grant Application: The 2025-26 CLG Grant application deadline is March 31, 2025. Condelli asked if there are other ways that committees spend grant funding. Thaden mentioned that all grants are posted on SHPOs website. d. Brochures Distribution Update: No update. e. SDSU ID Home Tour Request: Callies mentioned that the interior design program is looking to conduct up to four home tours with two tours per day over two days. The tours would be with SDSU architecture students. Kosbua mentioned interested in hosting a tour. f. 2025 BRBA Home Show: Merriman mentioned that the BHPC will get a reduced nonprofit rate of $225. Merriman discussed rental needs and displays. A room has been reserved for presentations. Chuck Bennis will speak. Callies mentioned a couple of other speaker suggestions. f. Sioux Falls Loan Program: Callies mentioned that a new incentive is being offered in Sioux Falls. A Historic Home Repair Loan Program offers up to $25,000 for exterior repairs including windows, doors and siding. Up to four applicants can receive funds with a total annual funding of $100,000. Approved work needs to be done within one year. Merriman mentioned that a similar program is suggested in the updated Preservation Plan for implementation in later years. Upcoming Events a.
