HomeMy WebLinkAboutBHSMinutes_2022_06_271 Brookings Health System Board of Trustees Minutes of Meeting June 27, 2022 Members Present: Dick Peterson, Sheila Anderson, Lynn Darnall, Daryl Englund, Andrew Ellsworth, Tracy Greene, Mary Ann Krogh, David Meyer, Jim Morgan; ex-officio: Brianna Doran Management Present: Jason Merkley, CEO; Tammy Hillestad, CNO; Melissa Wagner, CFO and Sheri Wiig, recorder President Peterson called the meeting to order at 5:00 p.m. EDUCATION - Brookings Health System Community Health Worker Program Hillestad introduced Alyssa Olson, EMT and Brookings Health System’s new Community Health Worker (CHW). The role of a CHW is a new concept in the State of South Dakota and Brookings Health is on the cutting edge in providing this impactful community service which focuses on social determinates of health and high-risk patients at Brookings Health. A Community Health Worker (CHW) is a frontline public health worker who is a trusted member of and/or has a good understanding of the community. In 2021 Brookings Health applied for and was awarded a grant through the South Dakota Department of Health to fund training and develop the CHW program. Olson received her CHW certification from Lake Area Technical Institute in December 2021 and soon thereafter began receiving referrals from the Emergency Department and Inpatient Care. Olson described her role as a liaison between the patient and hospital to provide support to patients, decrease readmissions and improve patient outcomes through personalized home visits. Olson also acts as a valuable resource for connecting patients to services available in the community. Olson outlined two (2) patient profiles that resulted in very positive outcomes. Members thanked Olson for her presentation and the obvious passion she has as a Community Health Worker. Olson exited the meeting at 5:30 p.m. Newly appointed City ex-officio, Brianna Doran was welcomed and introduced. INVITED GUEST – Keith Mahlum SDSU Partnership Opportunities and Investment Considerations Keith Mahlum, Vice President for Development for the SDSU Foundation, was introduced and welcomed. Mahlum thanked Brookings Health and members of the board for their support and partnership that has grown over the years. Mahlum presented a proposal highlighting investment opportunities designed to support workforce development within Brookings Health System and increase brand visibility on the SDSU campus. Options for Brookings Health System to consider that address workforce needs and brand awareness include scholarships, student sponsorships and naming opportunities. Mahlum was thanked for his time and exited the meeting at 6pm. Merkley also noted, as of June 18, 2022, the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) voted to recommend COVID vaccines for young children ages 6 months - 5 years; both Moderna and Pfizer vaccine series are available. CFO Report Wagner reported on data that impacts net days in AR. The net accounts receivable balance and average daily net charge are key performance indicators that play a crucial role in determining the Net Days in AR. With recent staff turnover of the Accounts Payable Specialist position, efficiency gains were realized and will be implemented with the new AP Specialist who will start next week. CNO Report Hillestad highlighted benefits of the new Viz.ai software recently implemented in the Emergency Department. Viz.ai utilizes an artificial intelligence platform to alert care teams of a suspected large vessel occlusion (LVO) in an effort to greatly improve outcomes. Proper course of treatment can be identified much faster resulting in reduction of the devastating effects of a stroke. Board Committee Reports Administrative Committee Committee member Englund provided a report; the Administrative Committee met on June 21, 2022. Topics of discussion included a proposal from Leo A Daly Architects for the Yorkshire Medical Building, Provider Recruitment, Incident Command System relating to the storm in May, Northern Plains Health Network, Community Health Worker, SDSU/BHS Partnership, Job/Position Architecture Project, Elkton/Mills Construction, Yorkshire Plaza and the Isaac Scot Nursery Dedication. 7 Finance Committee Committee Chair Anderson provided a report; the Finance Committee met on June 21, 2022. The committee reviewed and approved the payables, adjustments, and financials for April and May. A cash flow projection update was given as well as an overview of the Critical Access Hospital analysis. Quality Committee Committee Chair Krogh provided a report; the Quality Committee met on June 21, 2022. Administrator for The Neighborhoods at Brookview, Jeremy Klinkhammer, presented results from the South Dakota State Department of Health survey. Other topics of discussion included an update on the CMS Hospital 5 Star rating program and 2022 patient care contracted services.
