Brookings Airport Board
Brookings, SD 57006
December 17, 2009
The Brookings Airport Board was called to order by Chairperson Jeff Boulware
on Thursday, December 17, 2009 at 3:30 PM in the Meeting Room at City Hall.
Members present were Orv Smidt, Lynn Riedesel, Jim Bailey, and Boulware. Judy
McLaughlin was absent. Also present were Randy Hanson – Pheasant’s Fury
Aviation, City Engineer Jackie Lanning, and Airport Manager Mike Wilson.

Old Business
Item #5 – Snow Removal Operations - Wilson stated moving snow with the new
truck works well. They plan on putting guides on each side of the plow so they know
how close they get to things. It takes a little over an hour to clean the runway.
Item #6 – Hangar Inspections - Wilson has the hangar inspections scheduled for
February 3rd before the airport potluck. Anyone that wishes to refuel and received a
letter from Wilson will be inspected. Wilson spoke with M & T Fire Safety, and they will
plan a day prior to the 2010 fall Inspection to certify fire extinguishers on the airport.
Wilson will update later when this day will be.
Item #7 – Hangar Numbering – The Board liked the idea of the numbering system
on the hangars. The numbering would start with the letter “A” on the north row of
hangars and start at A1 moving west to east with A2, A3, etc. The next row south
would be row “B” with hangar numbers starting at the west and working east
again. The future hangar row would be letter “D”. There would be one letter per
door and would be listed on the leases as such. Riedesel asked when the
numbering system will be installed on the hangars. Wilson answered this spring they
will be put on. One of the hangars has doors on both ends, and it will have the
same letters at each end. If the hangar has more than one door on one side, each
door will receive a letter.

Item #8 – Pitts’ Property Purchase - Wilson stated the City is taking possession of the
Pitts’ property on December 31st and conducting a walkthrou gh the same day.
The city will rent the house and out buildings for a couple of years. There is rural
water/electric and liquid propane for heat in the house.
Item #9 – Airport Manager’s Report – Wilson mentioned the State Historic
Preservation Office (SHPO) has 30 days to review the environmental assessment.
The information from SHPO will then be added to the assessment, and it will return
to the FAA for Legal and Regional Review.
Item #10 – FBO Report – Hanson stated this past week the card reader wouldn’t
accept a card. Wilson stated that he wasn’t aware of that situation, and he would
check into it.
SDSU hangar is up to code. New fixtures were installed along with fluorescent
lights in the hangar.
Riedesel commented on how good of a mechanic Paul Hartje is and that he
is now having his annual inspections conducted by him. Bailey also commented
how Paul is very accommodating, helpful and is an asset to Pheasants Fury.
Boulware stated the University is trading out some of their airplanes. The new
airplanes will have G1000 glass cockpits.
Hanson told the board that traffic isn’t as good as it has been. He thinks the
cold weather may have something to do with the slower traffic.
The meeting was adjourned.
