HomeMy WebLinkAboutAirMinutes_2023_10_19Brookings Regional Airport Board Brookings, SD 57006 October 19, 2023 The Brookings Airport Board was called to order by Brian Van Liere on Thursday, October 19, 2023 at 3:30 PM in Conference Room #241, Second Floor. Members present were Brian Van Liere, Lynn Riedesel, Isaac Wilde and Brady Klocker (phone). Also present were Airport Manager Lucas Dahl, Airport Technician Brett Torgrude, City Engineer Charlie Richter, Public Works Director John Thompson, Dan Krogstad, and Chris Funk. Item #1 - Roll Call Item #2 - (Klocker/Riedesel) Motion to approve the agenda. All present voted aye. MOTION CARRIED. Item #3 - (Van Liere/Riedesel) Motion to approve the August 17, 2023 minutes. All present voted aye. MOTION CARRIED. Item #4 - Discuss Future Revenue and Finances of the Brookings Reaional AirDort Thompson explained how the airport budget is balanced with landfill transfer. Asked board for ideas on how to generate additional funds and reduce costs. Riedesel suggested selling additional fuel and cautioned on additional fees. Klocker spoke about a charitable foundation where people could make donations to airport enterprise account. Can City Attorney help set it up? Chris Funk suggested converting the airport hay land to cropland, though FAA approval would be needed. Additional discussion was held among the group in regards to terminal rent and expansion. Thompson asked Dahl to talk to Helms to come up with ideas for revenue generation. And to also reach out to neighboring mid -sized airports to see how much their operating budget is supplemented by their City. Item #5 - Lease Transfer of Madison Aircraft Hangar - Chris Funk explained that he has o 5-year contract for deed for his Hanger and that the new tenants would like a letter of intent stating that they can obtain the lease agreement. Item #6 - Airport Board Vacancy - Board members were asked to review the applications for the vacant Board position and to email their input to Lucas or Lana. Item #7 - Airport Manager's Report - Dahl spoke about the new paint on the hold short markings, and that the entire air field will be repainted in 2025 at the cost of Farhrner Ashpahlt because of the seal coat mistakes that were made during the project. He also stated that the mowing is slowing down and that they will start transitioning the equipment for snow removal and that winter operations will remain the same as in past years. First priority will be the main Runway and Taxiway A, Al, A4, and a path to FBO. All other surfaces will be after those. Riedesel asked about a potential GPS approach for Runway 17, once the parallel taxiway project is complete. Dahl stated that he would reach out to Helms about a future GPS approach. Item #7 - SDSU Report - No Report Item #8 - FBO Report - No Report Item #9 - Other Items & Reports - Thompson was wondering about some sort of educational outreach to the citizens of Brookings, on numbers of SDSU students in the aviation program and where they go and what they do after graduation (flyover at the SDSU football game were SDSU graduates) . He also mentioned the possibility of a new Fire Station located on Airport property. Item #10 - Next Scheduled Meeting - November 16, 2023.
