HomeMy WebLinkAboutResolution 060-2011 - no action takenResolution No. 60 -1 1 A Resolution Requesting Special Legislation Authorizing the Taxation Authority for an Additional One Percent Sales and Use Tax for the City of Brookings to be used for support of South Dakota State University, for capital improvements and other economic development purposes Whereas, South Dakota State University is the largest, single generator of economic development in the City of Brookings, and Whereas, the State of South Dakota has imposed budget reductions on SDSU in a partial effort to eliminate the State's budgetary shortfall in the amount of $3.825 million, and Whereas, the City of Brookings has a long and aggressive record of promoting, retaining, and assisting entities, organizations, and businesses in the interest of economic development and growth, and Whereas, the replacement of lost state funding is vital to continued growth and development of SDSU and the City of Brookings, Now, Therefore, Be it Resolved by the City Council of the City of Brookings, that the City of Brookings requests the legislative delegation of District 7 to introduce legislation in the 2012 legislative session authorizing the City of Brookings to impose an additional one percent sales tax pursuant to SDCL Chapter 10 -52 so that such funds would be available to support South Dakota State University for authorized purposes; and that at such time as $3.825 million has been generated, the sales tax authorization shall expire. Be It Further Resolved that such taxing authority shall be subject to a referendum by electors of the municipality. Passed and Adopted by the City Council on the 10`h day of May, 201 1.
