Approval of Minutes – Kate Treiber motioned to approve, second by Jamison Lamp; motion carried. 4. Old Business: A. Poet Laureate Poetry Walk: 1) Taylor talked to Betty Beers - Plaques are still with the fabricator. Behind schedule from previously planned June. One to two day install once they are fabricated. Poetry Society, Visit Brookings, and PAC. We contributed about $6,700. And could provide a quote to the Poetry Society on behalf of the PAC for a press release. 2) We could look at providing some talking points/highlights about what it is and where it is. 3) Could Visit Brookings include 1-2 pages about the Public Art Commission in Visit Brookings guide. Jamison is going to email Lili. B. Conditions/Maintenance Report: Annual maintenance on the bronze will be coming around in August/September. About $300. C. Bob Shelden Capital Improvement Project 1) Installation – Install ended up a bit behind schedule due to derecho, materials were stuck in China, and artist illness. Finished install in June. The artists provided some great maintenance information. We need to find a good location to house maintenance information. Possibly the library. 2) Ribbon Cutting/Celebration – a) Could Friends of Baseball do an exhibition type game in mid-later August. Some fun game – quick home run derby, scrimmage, end of season gathering. Could include popcorn, crackerjacks, or ice cream. b) People to include – Commission, past Commission, City Council, Friends of Brookings. c) Preferred date - Tuesday 8/30, 4:30PM. Second date option 8/23. 1. Taylor will check with Mike Lockrem to confirm date. d) Taylor and Emily will work on ribbon cutting details. e) Register did an article yesterday. Kelo will be interviewing them for TV tomorrow. Taylor will do a short piece for the news. f) Touch base with Mike Jewett. 5. New Business: A. Utility Box Wraps: 1) Taylor provided call to artists example. Taylor has requested quotes from Cabana Banners and Outlaw Graphics. $18 per square inch and $35-50 per hour for installation. One box could be installed in a few hours. Taylor’s math – one box could be printed and installed in $600-$900 (does not include artist stipend). From researching other art commissions, typical artist stipends range from $300-$600. Cabana Banners was a little cheaper than Outlaw. However, Cabana has very limited staff and has been handing off projects to Outlaw. Cabana said they could do it yet this fall if it was just 2-3 boxes. 2) Need to decide timeline to request art by and create a subcommittee. 3) Could invite SDSU students to submit artwork. 4) Need to determine which boxes will be the first (4-5 for options). 5) Do the applicants need to be 18+? Maybe a future request could be a call for youth to submit designs (if the box was in a park for example). 6) We should clarify the intention behind why we are putting them out – creating the accessibility to create art for all ages for example. 7) Dusty and Taylor have approval from BMU to do the project. Taylor will check if there is a schedule for maintenance on the boxes from BMU’s side. We could investigate if BMU/Midwest Energy would be interested in partnering. 8) Taylor will continue to work on the submission form/instructions and the goals for whole project. Julia and Linda volunteered to assist. 9) Need to develop plan for which boxes to include. 6. Correspondence/Announcements/Calendar: A. Next Meeting: October 6, 2022 at Noon 7. Adjournment – 1:04PM with motion by Jean Jostad, second by Jamison Lamp; motion carried. Submitted, Emily Howell PAC Commission Member
