1. The meeting was called to order at 12:02 p.m.
2.Approval of agenda
A motion to add a welcome to SDSU liaison Lynda Venhuizen was made by Carol,
seconded by Ramona. The motion carried by the following votes:

Sternhagen, Ali Teesdale, Matthew Weiss

3. Approval of minutes
A motion to approve the minutes was made by Carol,seconded by Ramona. The
motion carried by the following votes:

4. Welcome of new member - Lynda Venhuizen
●Field placement coordinator at SDSU, background in early childhood education
with an emphasis on inclusive education.
5. Budget update
●Balance currently is $1,729.78.

●Matt: Recently sent out a recap e-mail about the ice cream social.

●No updates at this time.
c.Recorder
●No updates at this time.
d.Publicity coordinator
●Mark: Will be speaking in the student union (Harold Crest Room) at SDSU on
October 19 at 12:30 p.m.
e.City ADA coordinator
●Nancy: Reported that Susan requested we review city documents that were sent
out and submit feedback by September 15.
f.County ADA coordinator
●No updates at this time.
g.SDSU Liaison
●Lynda: Reached out to Nancy Hartenhoff-Crook (disability services coordinator)
on campus, but has not received any requests yet of information to share with
the committee.
●Lynda: Reported that SDSU is in the process of hiring an ADA Coordinator but
does not yet have updates to share.
h.Human Rights Commission Liaison
●No updates at this time.
7. Events/Public Promotions:
a.August 20th - “Disabled Day for Kids” at Creative Space Studio on Main
●Aysia: Shared the event was positively-received, with low attendance, and
that The Creative Space Studio owner Brittany DeRyke offered to host a
second session at no additional cost to the Disability Awareness
Committee.
A motion to have a second session of the Kids Like You art event on September 24,
2022 at The Creative Space Studio during the downtown Brookings fall festival
weekend was made by Carol, seconded by Ramona. The motion carried by the
following votes:

b.October 11th – NDEAM Mayoral Proclamation (Date TBD)
●Matt: Reviewed proclamation and noted that the first sentence must be
amended to add "Awareness" to accurately reflect the acronym NDEAM,
and he has already changed to identifier-first language across the text.
A motion to approve the amended NDEAM mayoral proclamation for October 11, 2022
was made by Aysia, seconded by Ali. The motion carried by the following votes:

c.October 15th – White Cane Awareness Day
●Matt: Reminded that members on this event task force are Izzy, Matt and
Ramona, and shared details regarding the event (which have not changed
substantially from last year's commemoration, but we do need to apply for
a permit from the city).
●Matt: Requested that Lynda contact Nancy (SDSU) to mobilize the student
body.
●Aysia: Re-sent same e-mail copy from last year to Brookings Lions Club
e-mail addresses (bellr@brookings.net,mitchsteinhoff@hotmail.com).
Phone numbers for Bob (605-692-6056) and Mitch (605-651-4258) can be
used, if needed.
●Carol: Suggested submitting press release to Brookings Register.
A motion to allocate $40 for White Cane Awareness Day event was made by Ramona,
seconded by Carol. The motion carried by the following votes:

d.December 1st – Mayor ’s Awards 2022
●Ramona: Sent nomination forms the ABLE and Empower Awards to her
contacts.
●Nancy: Susan reported not having the finalized copy of the nomination
forms, however they were sent out in an e-mail on August 3, 2022. These
nomination forms have not been publicized on the City of Brookings
website or social media so that will need to be done ASAP, and the due
date may need to be moved accordingly due to this oversight.
●Lynda: Asked about past award recipients.
e.Tabled - “Public Listening Session for Parents with Children with Disabilities” (or
vice versa)
●Will stay tabled for now.
f.Tabled - “Public Listening Session for Disabilities in the Workforce”
●Will stay tabled for now.
8. Subcommittee/Task Force Updates:
a.Marketing Subcommittee
●Mark: Mentioned that at the BATA board meeting yesterday, they
discussed expanding weeknight hours, which has been a barrier
preventing access to many community events.
b.Accessibility Task Force
●No updates at this time.
c.Work Plan Task Force
●No updates at this time.
9. Other Items:
a.BATA coin usage
●Rachel is not in attendance, to elaborate further.
b.Website Updates on Available Accessible Housing issue
●Matt: Requested tabling for now, due to meeting time constraints.
c.Gathering of Partner Organization List
●Jon: Sent expanded list to Susan/Nancy and Matt via e-mail.
d.Meeting Time Responses
●Aysia: Shared that the most-requested time frame was Fridays at noon,
however the city offices are closed to meetings then. So, with the next
most-requested time being Thursdays at noon, we shall remain meeting at
the regular time.
e.Quote from Outlaw Graphics for screen print logo on two 6-foot tablecloths
●Aysia: Izzy is absent today, but has contacted the vendor for a quote and
is waiting for a response.
f.“News Line” coming to South Dakota
●Will stay tabled for now.
g.Next meeting date & format
●September 22, 2022 at 12:00 p.m.Hybrid attendance is still an option.
10. Announcements
●Matt: Shared that in September, committee roles are up for election, so come to
the September meeting prepared!
