1. The meeting was called to order at 12:01 p.m.
2. Approval of Agenda
a.Amendments:

A motion to approve the agenda and minutes was made by Jon, seconded by Izzy. The
motion carried by the following votes:

3. Approval of minutes
A motion to approve the agenda and minutes was made by Brianna, seconded by Izzy.
The motion carried by the following votes:

4. Budget
-Balance currently is $2939.89 ($3000 - cost of cookies).
5. Officer Updates:
a.Chair
●Matt: Will reach out to Kathy re: community band event around ADA Day.
●Mark: Spoke with Travis at BATA meeting, regarding expanded bus service for
July 24 (potential community band event day closest to ADA Day), BATA is
willing to expand service but needs dates.
b.Vice Chair
●No updates at this time.
c.Recorder
●No updates at this time.
d.Publicity coordinator
●(Mark will discuss related to Promotions sub-committee.)
e.City ADA coordinator -

g.SDSU Liaison
●Jon: Shared that SDSU and BATA are discussing bus route improvements and
better accessibility.
h.Human Rights Commission Liaison
●No updates at this time.
6. Events/Public Promotions:
a.Year End Report - March 31
i.Brianna: Shared that event went great. Recalled that Patty asked a
question that we could follow-up on; Brianna will connect with Patty to gain
more information.
ii.Mark: Said, "We knocked it out of the park!"
iii.Mark: Suggested that city should plan to have a monitor in front of the
presenter, rather than behind, for ease of presenting.
b.Ideas for Q2 Awareness Events
i.Mark: Requested we attend the city council meeting on May 10, when the
Brookings Mental Health Coalition will endorse a mayoral proclamation for
mental health awareness.
ii.Brianna: Noted that we can join the e-mail list, there will be apparel and
social media outreach related to the Brookings Mental Health Coalition
awareness event.
iii.Izzy: Suggested that our committee would sponsor arts event at the
Creative Space Studio for disabled children.
1.Aysia: Encouraged timing around ADA Day.
2.Jon: Suggested collaboration with the Brookings Arts Council.
3.Matt: Asked who might be willing to participate— Ali, Aysia, Izzy will
connect with Brittany DeRyke (Creative Space Studio owner) and
work on event planning and support.
4.Mark: Requested cost estimate for next month (May) for
consideration if the Disability Awareness Committee partly or fully
sponsoring event.
iv.Izzy: Proposed that we have a public listening session for disabled
entrepreneurs/business owners.
1.Mark: Suggested this in Q3, closer to NDEAM.
2.Matt: Asked who might be willing to participate— Aysia, Izzy, Jon,
Mark will collaborate.
v.Izzy: Noted that Newsline (a newspaper in audio-format from the National
Federation of the Blind) is coming to South Dakota, so if we know
community members who could benefit, connect them with Izzy (because .
1.Izzy: Requested to promote on Disability Awareness Committee
social media.
vi.Izzy: Proposed that we have a public listening session for disabled parents
and parents of disabled children.
1.Matt: Asked who might be willing to participate— Aysia, Michelle
will collaborate.
2.Mark: Mentioned that Lifescape has faced issues with participation
in similar events and suggested that summer might not be the best
timing.
3.Aysia: Agreed with Mark, the consistency of the academic year
might be more workable for families.
4.Michelle: Suggested we provide lunch if we plan a noon hour event.
5.Izzy: Inquired about outdoor setting.
6.Nancy: Wondered if we might plan to record the event.
7.Aysia: Envisioned recording the event might be helpful from a data
collection point-of-view.
c.Work Plan Review and Discussion of Upcoming Events
i.Jon: Recalled plan to generate a calendar on which we base outreach.
1.Brianna: Reminded about the United Way community calendar for
event planning, but noted that the Chamber of Commerce, Visit
Brookings, Brookings School District, and SDSU all have separate
calendars.
2.Matt: Summarized that our first action is to invite those who are
running allied events to participate in Disability Awareness
Committee meetings in the months before.
3.Mark: Volunteered to liaise with Shelly Bayer, SDSU Director of
Multicultural Affairs, as the next best contact, since Nancy has
resigned as Disability Services Coordinator.
4.Michelle: Affirmed that Shelly is the most relevant contact at SDSU
at the current time.
5.Matt: Asked who might be willing to participate in compiling a
calendar of events for next meeting (May)— Ali, Aysia, Brianna will
collaborate.
ii.Aysia: Noted Brooking Inclusive Collaborative event; Aysia will collect
more information about the next event, in June, to be shared with the rest
of the committee.
d.Brookings Community Band Concert - Ice Cream Sponsor
i.Alyssa: Shared that she is part of the SDSU band program, and is willing
to connect with Dr. Reynolds about the projected schedule for the
summer.
7. Subcommittee/Task Force Updates:
a.Marketing Subcommittee
●Mark: Updated on cookie options before Community Band concert.
Subcommittee discussed using the "What if it was me?" logo, but font is
not able to be changed on materials, brainstormed about putting a QR
code on a sticker on the cookies that links to the story of the logo.
1.Matt: Asked about cookie pricing.
2.Mark: Explained cost is $2/cookie + shipping, though we can get a
discount the larger the order.
●Mark: Recalled that we are interested in participation at Downtown at
Sundown however the dates are not yet set so it may be difficult to plan. If
we participate, we can work with BATA to expand service during the
day/time of the event.
b.Accessibility Task Force

c.Work Plan Task Force (Jon, Carol, Alyssa)
●No updates at this time.
8. Other Items:
a.Discussion on "Information Place" for new Brookings residents.
●No updates at this time.
b.Discussion on educational opportunity on available accessible housing issue.
●No updates at this time.
c.Next meeting date & format
●May 26, 2022 at 12:00 p.m. Hybrid attendance is still an option.
9. Announcements
●Brianna: Thanked everyone for collaboration on the Disability Awareness
Committee, pending the results of the recount on Monday, May 2, she will likely
be sworn in on city council.
10. Adjournment
