HomeMy WebLinkAboutBHPCMinutes 2022_02_10Brookings Historic Preservation Commission February 10, 2022 Minutes A meeting of the Brookings Historic Preservation Commission was held on Thursday, February 10 2022 in the Brookings City & County Government Center. Members present: Matthew Weiss, Janet Merriman, Jon Stauff, Janet Gritzner, Paula Carson and Kyle Nelson. Tom Thaden was absent. Also present were Mike Struck, Community Development Director and City Planner Ryan Miller. Weiss called the meeting to order at 6:10 p.m. A motion was made by Merriman and seconded by Gritzner to approve the agenda. All present voted aye. A motion was made by Stauff and seconded by Gritzner to approve the January 13, 2022 minutes. All present voted aye. 11.1 Review Updates.  None. Upcoming Events.  2022 CLG Conference: March 30 – April 1. The registration deadline for the conference is March 1. To get the event rate for the hotel, rooms must be booked by February 14.  The South Dakota History Conference is April 22 in Pierre. Other Items & Reports. a. National Parks Service Report Miller mentioned that the report was submitted to SHPO and staff is waiting for their review. b. City Annual Report Miller explained that the annual report will no longer be required. c. Special Projects Update I. University Residential Historic District Plaques No update. II. Flyers Distribution Gritzner spoke to the Art Museum and they will accept some flyers. III. Library Display of Bob Pengra models Gritzner said she spoke with the Library Board. The Library will display the models and they can then be moved to the City/County building for display afterward. Struck mentioned that Tom Thaden has taken pictures of the models and will do some research on each of the buildings. Thaden will write some draft overviews of each. d. Public Education Subcommittee Updates I. Facebook efforts Merriman mentioned that she posted twice in February. II. The intern estimates were reduced to $3,150 and the welcome package was reduced to $300. There were no changes to the summer event. The total year one costs estimate is $3,950. e. City Connections Subcommittee Updates I. Year 1 Work Plan action item estimates Weiss stated that support for the Downtown Economic Development Incentive Fund was moved to year two. Year one estimates include $650 for the mayor’s awards, $600 for workshops and education. The idea of registering for a booth at the home builders show was discussed. There is not enough time to plan for this year but maybe next year. Other items discussed were additional survey work, the National Association of Preservation Commissions’ Forum in Cincinnati and an awareness campaign leading up to and during preservation month. This could be a series of advertisements in the paper or the shopper. Miller will get some quotes from the Shopper. Miller will also check with SHPO regarding the reallocation of 2021 grant dollars towards training and the ad campaign. Future Meeting Schedule & Time  The next meeting will be February 10, 2022.
