The Brookings Airport Board was called to order by Brian VanLiere on
Wednesday, July 21, 2021 at 3:30 PM in Conference Room #241, Second Floor.
Members present were Brady Klocker, Judy McLaughlin, Ory Smidt, and
VanLiere. Riedesel was absent. Also present were Airport Manager Matthew
Sommerfeld, Airport Maintenance Technician Lucas Dahl and FBO - Randy
Hansen and Paul Hanusa.
Item #1 - Roll Call
Item #2 - (McLaughlin/Klocker) Motion to approve the agenda. All present
voted aye. MOTION CARRIED.
Item #3 - (Klocker/Smidt) Motion to approve the June 16, 2021 minutes. All
present voted aye. MOTION CARRIED.
Item #4 - The next scheduled meeting date is Thursday, August 19, 2021, at 3:30
p.m.
Item #5 - Hangar Development - Hanson provided an updated layout of the
plans. At this time they plan to build on the east side of the ARFF building. They
are still working on the aesthetics of the building. Sommerfeld stated that they
are drafting a lease that will start this Fall. This lease will need to be approved by
the City Council. Some fencing will need to be redone once the building is
complete. They will utilize the new hangar as a barrier along the fence line to
save on fencing expenses. The final plans will need to be submitted for the
August meeting for approval from the Airport Board. McLaughlin asked about
drainage around this hangar. Sommerfeld noted that during the taxilane
project in 2020, this site was built up approximately 10 feet or more.
Item #6 - Hangar Inspection - Sommerfeld stated that the inspections went well.
There were not any issues.
Item #7 - Airport Manager's Report - An application has been submitted to
obtain funds through the rescue plan with COVID relief money. Sommerfeld has
plans for a couple of projects.
August 30th thru September 10th there will be some NORAD testing complete
again. There will be 10-13 aircraft no more than 5 flying at a time. Aircraft will be
flying dark and NOTAMs will be issued regarding their flight activities. They will be
using the terminal building for base operations during their stay. Most of their
flying will be taking place near the Buffalo Ridge area.
There was a grass fire on the airfield yesterday. It appears there was a spark
from some haying equipment that may have ignited it.
Item #8 - Helm's Updates - We are waiting on the grant award for the seal
coating project. Sommerfeld is debating about waiting to do this project until
after the Jacks Bash Event that will be bringing a C 17 to town and also the
NORAD testing.
Items #9 - SDSU Report - The Fly-In/Pancake Feed event was a success.
Item #10 - FBO Report - Hanusa reported that Fortune Brands has flown in again
but their operations are going to slow down a bit now. Fuel sales are still good.
However, fuel prices are starting to go up. They haven't increased their prices,
yet.
