HomeMy WebLinkAboutSCMinutes_2018_04_11Sustainability Council April 11, 2018 (unapproved) A meeting of the Sustainability Council was held on Wednesday, April 11, 2018 at 4:00 p.m. at Brookings City & County Government Center with the following members present: Norma Nusz Chandler, Nels Granholm, Shelly Brandenburger, Bob McGrath, Jennifer McLaughlin, Stephanie Aure, Betty Beer, Jane Hegland and Paul Peterson. Ben Kleinjan, Caleb Vukovich and Mike Lockrem were absent. Others present: Solid Waste Director Todd Langland, Shari Thornes and Laurie Carruthers. Chair Nusz Chandler called the meeting to order at 4:02 p.m. A motion was made by Peterson, seconded by Beer, to approve the amended agenda. All present voted yes; motion carried. A motion was made by McLaughlin, seconded by Brandenburger, to approve the February 14, 2018 minutes. All present voted yes; motion carried. Discussion and action on the 2018 goals and objectives The Council reviewed and edited the 2018 goals and objections. A motion was made by McGrath, seconded by McLaughlin, to direct the Executive Committee to make the final revisions. All present voted yes; motion carried. Discussion and action regarding sustainability award program. Thornes advised several Heartland communities have good examples of awards program and Mayor is in support of this addition to the Mayor’s Awards Reception. There are several different categories to consider and an award(s) could be included in this year’s reception and institutionalized as part of this program. The Executive Committee can draft the criteria, application and send out a press release for a June deadline. A motion was made by Aure, seconded McLaughlin, to endorse a Mayor’s Sustainability Program in 2018. All present voted yes; motion carried. McLaughlin left at 5:06 pm. Committee reports: Earth Day Earth day has been postponed due to weather and they are looking at rescheduling. Sustainability Day is October 10. Urban Ag/Local Foods; curbside composting update The City Manager needs more information about barriers to local food. The Council needs to develop a sustainability plan with measurable objectives in place, not just goals in the Comprehensive Master Plan. Peterson left at 5:16 pm. Liaison reports: Brookings Bicycle Advisory Committee The Student’s Association is looking into bike share programs. Three companies will present to campus in April, and they would like to implement a program this fall. Big Sioux River Board Granholm reported the Friends of the Big Sioux River is conducting water sampling through volunteers. Hot topics include: concerns about agricultural tiling; interviews with the Sioux Falls Mayoral Candidates; request to interview Gubernatorial Candidates; studies about exposure to glyphosate (active ingredient in Roundup) found in urine and also providing an event calendar to the public. Aure left at 5:21 pm. Executive Committee reports The executive committee is finalizing the 2018 goals and 2017 annual report.
