HomeMy WebLinkAboutPACMinutes_2019_11_14Brookings Public Arts Commission November 14, 2019 Meeting Minutes Present: Linda Purrington, Trayce Meyer, Scott Wallace, Carrie Kuhl, Dusty Rodiek, Stacy Claussen, Ashley Biggar, Jamison Lamp, Darla Biel, and City Staff Dusty Rodiek (Parks, Rec & Forestry Director) and Stacy Claussen (Recreation Manager). Absent: Kate Treiber, Jean Jostad, and Lynn Verschoor. Meeting called to order at 11:50 AM. Chair requested to move item 4E on the agenda before the opportunity map item. Trayce motioned to approved agenda as modified. Linda seconded. Motion passed. Minutes from the October were approved. (Trayce motioned. Ashley seconded.) City/County Building Call: Steve Britzman prepared a general legal statement that will be added to all calls on Café, per their requirement. Darla will add it, then the call will be live. Discussion on how to best share the information, as we didn’t pay the extra marketing fee to CaFe. Darla will work with Chelsie and also send the information to the State Arts Councils for the eligible region. The Commission is also encouraged to share information in their circles. Discussion on maintenance/repair of Sanctuary in Larson Park. $6,500 quote for repair. Dusty is working on quote for landscaping around the piece. Parks would contract for install and then provide maintenance on landscaping. Discussion of Bob Shelden Field. City Council approval is needed for a project of this scope. City’s Public Arts Guidelines are available on the website and will be helpful. Dusty will continue to work with design team. Next steps: Visit with Bonnie to get on City Council agenda to get approval for approximate dollar figure. Then open call can be established. Arts Selection Panel will be Scott, Lynn, Carrie, Darla, representative from Friends of Baseball, and City of Brookings. (Possibly Erika Saunders from the Park and Rec Board.) A community member at-large will be added. Names suggested: Jodi Lundgren and Ashley Ragsdale Work Plan: Marketing—Commission Plaques could be added. City website will launch December 5th. Community Outreach (after first of year) to solicit input to create Arts Opportunity Map. Scott suggested increase outreach and education to keep public engaged in Public Arts. Discussion of doing this after repair on Sanctuary as a part of “grand reopening.” Announcements: • Darla invited to be part of a webinar by DataArts on Arts Ecosytems: What factors contribute to a vibrant arts community. (December 10) • DataArts also requested representation on a panel presentation at Americans for the Arts Conference. Proposal has been submitted by SMU DataArts and Darla is listed as panelist. (Similar topic as above.) • 2020 States Arts Conference. We missed the deadline to submit a proposal, but should attend and submit for the next conference.
