HomeMy WebLinkAboutBHSMinutes_2005_05_26 BROOKINGS HEALTH SYSTEM BOARD OF TRUSTEES MEETING May 26, 2005 The regular meeting of the Board of Trustees of the Brookings Health System was held at 7:00 p.m. on May 26, 2005, in Hospital Conference Rooms A-B-C with the following members present: Carole Johnson, Rob Jones, Chuck Blazey, Roberta Olson, and President Ardelle Roberts. Ex- officio Julie Whaley, CFO Kevin Coffey, Executive Secretary Pam Emmett. Cindy Mydland from the Sioux Valley Clinic was also present. Dr. Ramsay arrived at 7:10 p.m. and Michelle Robbins arrived at 7:40 p.m. Members Absent: Zeno Wicks and Dianna Evers. The meeting was called to order at 7:00 p.m. by President Roberts. All members present voted in favor of the motion. Financial Report: CFO Coffey presented the Brookings Hospital, Brookview Manor, Home Health/Hospice Agency, and Brookhaven Estates financials for April 2005. Home health expenses are up as we are still traveling to the Lake Preston area. Board members asked about which units are rented at Brookhaven and which are still being held with no money coming in. A performa for Brookhaven Estates will be brought to the next Board meeting. Motion by Jones, seconded by Johnson to approve the financial report. All members present May 26, 2005 Page 5 voted in favor of the motion. This included $1,008,172.73 in payroll and benefit expense for the month. CFO Coffey also presented statistical information and distributed statistical graphs. Personnel Information: New Employees: H. Bortnem, 23.03; V. Carda, 69.72; J. Klinkhammer, 85.00; K. Miller, 13.53; A. Rittershaus, 11.48; P. Tingle, 11.26. Committee Reports: Joint Conference (Medical Affairs): Has not met. Board members felt this committee should meet. President Roberts stated she would check with CEO Carda and the three physicians on the Joint Conference Committee to coordinate a meeting date. Strategic Planning: Has not met. Finance/Personnel: Has not met. The Board received a request from the Boys and Girls Club for a donation and Board members felt we should refer this back to the Finance/Personnel Committee to develop a donation policy. Board members felt it would be nice if we could get all donation requests at one time. The Finance/Personnel Committee will meet before next month=s Board of Trustees meeting to develop a policy on donations and bring back a recommendation for the Boys and Girls Club. Executive Committee: President Roberts reviewed the minutes from the May 23, 2005, Executive Committee meeting. Unfinished Business: Ex-officio Whaley stated she had contacted Mayor Munsterman regarding ex-officio appointments versus quarterly reports to the City Council. Mayor Munsterman has not made a decision on this issue at this time. It was noted that a letter had been sent to the SD State Department of Health regarding reducing the licensed hospital beds from 61 to 49. The SD State Department of Health stated that before they can approve the change in licensed beds, we must contact our Fiscal Intermediary to see what they require for changing our licensed beds. CFO Coffey stated that he is still monitoring patient numbers to see if we will be able to apply for critical access status. It was noted that the privacy room had been put on hold so the DXA room could be finished. The DXA room is now finished and work can resume on the privacy room. New Business: There was a question as to why skin care ulcers for BVM residents was so high. It was noted that many of the residents with skin care ulcers are coming to us from another facility. There is a skin care protocol manual that is followed to reduce the skins ulcers after the residents arrive at our facility. May 26, 2005 Page 6 It was noted that the physicians are now certified for interpreting DXA scans, but the machine still needs to be certified. The DXA machine will be certified the first of June, and then sample DXA scans will be performed. It was noted that we have 25 patients on the waiting list to have DXA scans. Reading and Information: Board members received for reading and information: Minutes from Executive Committee and Medical Staff meetings; Thank you notes from Kellie VanGerpen, Richard Wake family, and from Brookings High School. Comments: One Board member stated that her 7 year-old had a CT performed at Brookings Health System and it was a wonderful experience. She was very impressed with the new CT. Cindy Mydland, from Sioux Valley Clinic stated they are close to having a new doctor signing on at their clinic, and they are looking at a September opening date. There being no further business, there was a motion by Olson, seconded by Robbins to adjourn at 8:00 p.m. All members present voted in favor of the motion.
