Advisory Board Meeting Minutes
Wednesday, September 25, 2019 @ Noon

Present: Kyleigh Cramer, Jeff Holm, Rod Schaefer; Teri Ronning, Nick Schmeichel, Jennifer Johnson,
Laura Schoen Carbonneau; Jake Meshke, City of Brookings Assistant to City Manager; Erick Rangel, City
of Brookings CFO; Tom Richter, Swiftel Center Executive Director, Jeremy Linstad, Swiftel Center
Associate Executive Director, Matt Chapman, Swiftel Center Director of Food & Beverage, Andrea Hogie,
Swiftel Center Director of Finance, Kristina Lankow, Swiftel Center Sales & Marketing Manager.
Agenda Discussions:
Tom introduced Laura Schoen Carbonneau the new Brookings CVB Director.
Jennifer called the meeting to order.
The July 31, 2019 minutes were approved.
Kristina highlighted the part time job, hospitality and wedding campaigns. A press release about the
NAIA Best New Championship Host was sent. PJ Masks was just announced for a December show.
Some upcoming events include Dakotaland Fall Harvest Sale, Doobie Brothers, Pink Ladies Dart
Tournament, Bridal Show, PRCA Rodeo, Veterans Day Program, Holiday Shopping Expo, PJ Masks,
HomeFree Concert, various meetings and wedding receptions.
Matt mentioned that 8,000 wings and 25,000 ounces of beer were consumed at the Wing & Brew Fest
that was held inside this year. He is a TAM instructor and has been training our bartenders. There
will be a special pink drink at the Pink Ladies Dart Tournament. A big food & beverage event in
November will be the Catholic Youth Rally. Tom & Matt are still working on getting tap beer in the
building.
Jeremy reported that Natalie & Andrea will be attending an Ungerboeck training in late September.
The 2020 operating budget and CIP have been approved by the city. We are working on upgrades
needed for the National Charolais Show in July 2020. This show will open the door for other large
animal shows. Doobie Brothers concert next week.
Tom sent around a positive email from the Manure Expo we held last year. City department heads
give a 15 minute presentation on their department at a City Council meeting – Tom is scheduled in

May. The PRCA Rodeo will be celebrating their 20 anniversary holding it at the Swiftel Center.
The Chamber is holding an event on the mezzanine on Friday night of the rodeo. They are hoping to
get 200 members to attend. With the implementation of Ungerboeck in July, we are still working on
the financials. Operations Supervisor Jordan Schroepfer has resigned. We are interviewing great
applicants to fill that position soon. There will be a training tomorrow night for all of our part time
staff. Jeff & Teri’s terms will be up at the end of this year and they are willing to renew for another
three years. The Swiftel Center and CVB teams meet monthly to collaborate on bringing more events

to Brookings. VenuWorks is now managing the building in Thief River Falls MN. Tom attended the
VenuWorks Executive Directors meetings and learned that the active shooter trainings are not
necessarily correct for arenas. He also attended the Arts Midwest Meeting in the cities and met with
agents. Our Tough Enough to Wear Pink campaign starts next week. All proceeds go to the
Brookings Health Foundation and are used locally. Since we started this campaign, we have raised
over $50,000.
