Advisory Board Meeting Minutes
Thursday, March 28, 2019 @ 4:00pm
Conference Room
Present: Kyleigh Cramer, Jeff Holm, Jennifer Johnson, Rod Schaefer, Nick Schmeichel, Teri Ronning; Erick
Rangel, City of Brookings CFO, Jake Meshke, City of Brookings Assistant to City Manager; Tom Richter,
Swiftel Center Executive Director, Jeremy Linstad, Swiftel Center Associate Executive Director, Desarae
Miles, Swiftel Center Food & Beverage Supervisor, Andrea Hogie, Swiftel Center Director of Finance.
Agenda Discussions:
Jennifer called the meeting to order.
Erick and Jake from the City of Brookings were introduced.
Jennifer has resigned her position at the CVB and therefore will no longer be on the advisory board.
The January 31, 2019 minutes were approved.
February financials were presented.
Tom presented the 2018 year end report by powerpoint and handed out the final reports.
Tom handed out the upcoming events for April and May which include: Chamber Annual Meeting,
SDSU Rodeo, SD Coin Club, WILL Lunch, Brookings Lincoln Day Dinner, Jehovah’s Witnesses,
Easter Egg Hunt, SDSU Engineering Expo, Junk Jam, BHS Prom, Leadercast, BHS Graduation and
various meetings. The Paw Patrol press release was handed out. Information was presented about
two FaceBook campaigns – Weddings Valentines & Event Planners. Updates to our website were
also presented.
Desarae highlighted the per caps for some of our recent events. We served 1300 people in 30
minutes at the NAIA banquet. Part time employees from all departments helped serve two of the
large banquets. State AAU Wrestling is the largest food & beverage event with 7000 in attendance
on Saturday. We have as much in sales as a concert without the beer. The CVB partnered with us as
we provided all athletes with Gatorade. We are continuing the F&B campaign promoting our in
house catering.
Jeremy reported that the weather has impacted all of our events in the first couple months of 2019.
The new WiFi system is running good with the number of users. We addressed all issues from the
2015 State AAU which included seating, WiFi, and food so this year State AAU ran smoothly.

Tom passed around our ads in the Pollstar magazine. Ashley Biggar one of our Event Managers is
leaving and will be the Director of Downtown. The City of Brookings leadership team held a
strategic retreat in which all departments gave presentations. These presentations will be given to the
City Council in May. Our future plans are to expand the convention center and add a hotel. The
American Freestyle Bullfighting have signed a couple year contract. We are hoping this new event
will keep growing. Meeting dates and times were discussed. The next meeting we will try
Wednesday at noon and see how that goes.
