The Brookings Traffic Safety Committee held its monthly meeting on Thursday, February
13, 2020 at 12:10pm in the City & County Government Center, Room 300.
Members Present: Kacie Richard, Jackie Lanning, Tony Sonnenburg, Dave Erickson,
Don Norton, Matt Bartley, Charles Schnabel, Justin Bucher, Jake McGlade and Lewayne
Erickson
Members Absent: Gary Gramm, Stacy Perry, Tim Heaton, and Brian Lueders.
Others Present:
Call to Order: Lewayne Erickson called the meeting to order.
Approval of Minutes: Bartley/Norton made a motion to approve the minutes from the
October 10, 2019 meeting. All present voted aye. Motion passed.

New Business:
Election of Officers for 2020
Sonnenburg/Lanning made a motion to nominate L. Erickson as Chair and K. Richard as
Vice Chair and they accepted the nominations. All present voted aye. Motion passed.
Update on 2020 Construction Projects
Lanning gave an update on the upcoming projects for 2020. She highlighted several
streets that were scheduled for asphalt overlays:
• 2nd Street from 6th Avenue to Medary Avenue
• Yorkshire Drive from Sunrise Ridge Road to the west approximately 1,000 feet
• Faculty Drive: water main on the entire street and asphalt overlay on the eastern leg
of Faculty Drive
• 10th Street from 22nd Avenue to 25th Avenue
• West 7th Avenue from West 13th Street to the north
• Alley between 6th Avenue and 7th Avenue connecting 8th Street and 9th Street

Update on 20th Street South Interchange Project
Lanning gave an update on this project. The City of Brookings was awarded a federal
“Better Utilizing Investments to Leverage Development” (BUILD) Grant to construct 20th
Street South between 22nd Avenue South and 34th Avenue South along with an
interchange at I-29 & 20th Street South. The project will include an Interstate Justification
Report, environmental assessment, right-of-way and design. The total project cost is
anticipated at $23,347,037 and approximately $4,669,407 or 20% of the funding is
provided by local funds. There is a group involved in the consultant selection including
City, County, DOT and Federal Highway staff. The project is scheduled to be designed in
2020, bid in approximately September 2021 and construction will start in 2022.
Review and approval of the 2019 Traffic Safety Committee Annual Report
Lanning described the 2019 Annual Report and all of the activity of the Traffic Safety
Committee. Norton/McGlade made a motion to approve the annual report. All present
voted aye. Motion passed.
