Stormwater Update
· Bioswale will be installed on the south side of the City/County building
o Will feature
§ Aspen trees
§ Gabion basket separator
§ Native grasses
§ Interpretive signage
§ Sediment stone collection & diffusion
o Will be completed in 2021 and cost around $35,000
· Bob Sheldon Park
o Permeable pavement system being installed for new lot
· Detention ponds
o Looking to add more no mow areas or incorporate pollinator plants
· Adding “no dumping/drains to stream” emblems on some storm water intakes around the
city
· Did social media campaigns about how high to mow the grass in order to improve
stormwater. Another campaign was on no mow areas.
Landfill
· Plastic Bags
o As of June report – 2% of totes from Brookings have plastics bags, this is good.
· Recycling numbers are increasing – have moved from low 80% to high 80% of residents
recycling. The increase is from a combination of new residential areas and people requesting
them.
· Citizens Campus
o Completed and open
o Avg 5-6 loads every night
· New landfill cell
o Closed out an old cell and covered it with soil and native grasses
o A new cell lasts on average 10 years (53,00 tons of waste a year)
· Yard waste carts
o Delivered over 3100 carts.
· Every 5 years do methane testing. That will occur this year. Takes about 30-35 years to
generate enough to use it.
City Update
· Passed mask mandate last night. In effect for 60 days.
· CLEAR committee created to look at social justice matters in Brookings
· 4 charges on EV station this last month. A few out of state vehicles.
· No mow areas going well in general.
BSC banner/tablecloth
· Approved 8ft tablecloth made of sustainable material (~$252)

· Stephanie will order banners and tablecloths
Sustainability Ads in Brookings Register
· Discussion around effectiveness of ads. Mike commented newspapers are seen by the 35+
age group. Discussed focusing ads on what the City is doing vs. encouraging residents to do
things.
· Motioned to create a marketing plan (newspaper and beyond) and to come back in
October with plan and costs.

Downtown Single Use Signs
· No update
· Discussed Plastic Score business and will invite a representative to present at the October
meeting.
Subcommittee Restructure
· All agreed need to revise. Split on if we should be better about assigning tasks or if only
have project based committees. Jennifer will connect with the rest of the committee to hear
their thoughts.

· Committee members are welcome to review applications. For sure accepting 1 application.
