A meeting of the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board was held on Monday, November 6, 2017 at 5:30
p.m. at the Larson Nature Center with the following board members present: Jay Larsen, Steve Berseth,
Sean Binker, Brittany Kleinsasser, Doug Smith and Erika Saunders. Others present included: Darren Hoff
(Recreation Manager), Stacy Claussen (Recreation Manager), Dan Brettschneider (Parks, Recreation &
Forestry Director) Al Kruse (Parks & Forestry Superintendent) and Christi Weidemann (Office Manager).
1. Call Meeting to Order. Kleinsasser called the meeting to order at 5:33 p.m.
2. Approval of Minutes. Approval of the August Park Board Meeting Minutes. J. Larsen made the
motion to approve the meeting minutes. Motion was 2nd by Berseth. All present voted yes;
motion carried.
3. Additions to and Approval of Agenda. Approval of the November Agenda. Berseth made the
motion to approve the meeting agenda. Motion was 2nd by Smith. All present voted yes;
motion carried.
4. Staff Highlights. Brettschneider reported on staff highlights report for September and October.
5. Facility Updates: Sexauer Park Restroom Project, Bob Shelden Athletic Complex RFP.
Brettschneider reported that the Sexauer Park restroom project includes four unisex restrooms
of which two will have accessible showers. There will be a bid opening on 11/7/2017. It is
scheduled to be awarded at the 11/28/2017 City Council Meeting. Ten proposals were received
for the Bob Shelden Athletic Complex RFP. Three firms have been selected for interviews on
11/7/2017.
6. South Dakota Parks & Recreation Association Annual Conference 2018. Brookings will host the
2018 SDPRA Conference. Tentative dates are October 16-18. The CVB has bids out for a place
to hold the main events. We are looking at having 25-30 vendors and approximately 125-150
people in attendance. Park & Recreation Board members interested in being part of the
conference planning committee should contact Hoff to be included in upcoming planning
meetings.
7. Dakota Nature Park Cross Country Ski Trail Map 2017-2018 Claussen handed out the updated
2017-18 Cross Country Ski Trail Map and highlighted changes to the map from last year based
on user feedback and maintenance staff suggestions.
8. Upcoming Programs and Events. A monthly “What’s Going On” flyer was sent to board
members prior to the meeting for informational purposes.
9. Adjourn. Kleinsasser adjourned.
December meeting will be Monday, December 4th at 5:30 p.m. at the Brookings Arts Council Building.
