A meeting of the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board was held on Monday, March 12th, 2018 at 5:30
p.m. at the Brookings City County Government Center with the following board members present: Jay
Larsen, Steve Berseth, Kristi Larsen, Doug Smith, Erika Saunders, and Thomas Thvedt. Others present
included: Darren Hoff (Recreation Manager), Stacy Claussen (Recreation Manager), Dan Brettschneider
(Parks, Recreation & Forestry Director) Al Kruse (Parks & Forestry Superintendent) and Christi
Weidemann (Office Manager).
1. Call Meeting to Order. Berseth called the meeting to order at 5:31 p.m.
2. Approval of Minutes. Approval of the February Park Board Meeting Minutes. Correct Spelling of
Stacy Barre to Stacy Bare in item number seven of February minutes. Smith made the motion to
approve the meeting minutes. Motion was 2nd by J. Larsen. All present voted yes; motion
carried.
3. Additions to and Approval of Agenda. Approval of the February Agenda. K. Larsen made the
motion to approve the meeting agenda. Motion was 2nd by J. Larsen. All present voted yes;
motion carried.
4. Staff Highlights. Brettschneider reported on staff highlights report for February.
5. Brochure Update. Hoff reviewed draft of 2018 Summer Recreation Programs Brochure.
6. EdgeBrook Annual Report. The 2017 EdgeBrook Annual Report was reviewed.
7. South Dakota Parks & Recreation Association Annual Conference Planning. Staff signed a
contract to host the event at the Swiftel Center. Working with Econo Lodge and Comfort Suites
for lodging. Next planning meeting will be April 18th at noon at the City County Government
Center room 300.
8. Review 2018 Parks, Recreation & Forestry Capital Improvement Projects. Brettschneider
reviewed 2018 Capital Improvement Projects. Hillcrest Aquatic Center will receive two new pool
heaters. Hillcrest and Indian Hills tennis courts will be resurfaced. Larson Ice Center ice
refrigeration system is experiencing multiple maintenance concerns that staff are working
diligently to repair and staff is investigating potential underlying causes to the issues with the
system. The Armory Recreation Center was closed for a day due to leaks in the roof from the
late snow and rain.
9. Upcoming Programs and Events. A monthly “What’s Going On” flyer was sent to board
members prior to the meeting for informational purposes.
10. Adjourn. Berseth adjourned.
The next meeting will be Monday, April 2 at 5:30 p.m. at the City County Government Center,
Community Room 300.
