HomeMy WebLinkAboutHRCMinutes_2016_12_12Brookings Human Rights Commission Minutes Monday,December 12, 2016 Room 300, Brookings City & County Government Building Attendance:Penny Hauffe, chair; Lawrence Novotny, recorder; George Hamer; Judy Karen; Shafiqur Rahman; and Shari Thornes, city clerk-staff.Absent:Steve Bayer, vice-chair;Laura Renee Chandler; Chandradhar Dwivedi; and Maggie Owens. Chair Hauffe called the meeting to order at 9:05 am. A motion was made by Rahman, seconded by Karen to approve the agenda. All present voted yes;motion carried. A motion was made by Rahman, seconded by Karen, to approve the minutes of the October 24, 2016 meeting. All present voted yes; motion carried. Schedule next meeting.Monday, January 9, 2017 at noon. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Award Program. The HRC members present judged the poster entries.Three members read the essays and ranked them. A motion was made by Hamer, seconded by Novotny, to award the following essay winners. Rahman abstained from the essay judging. Others present voted yes; motion carried. Request to sponsor Human Rights March/Rally on January 20, 2017: The HRC received an e-mail from Thomas Stenvig (nursing faculty at SDSU) in which he is requesting the HRC to take the lead in advocacy for human rights in Brookings.The Brookings Interfaith Council has also submitted a similar request.This issue will be discussed at our next meeting. Hauffe will send an e-mail to Stenvig and to Dianne Nagy (with the Interfaith Council) inviting both of them to attend our January 9 meeting. Form nominating committee for vice-chair: Vice-chair Bayer will become chair in January.The new vice-chair needs to be committed for 4 years –2 years as vice-chair and 2 years as chair. Hamer and Hauffe will serve on the selection committee. Annual report subcommittee: Novotny volunteered to draft the report. Announcements: Elliot Johnson has resigned as the student representative from HRC and moved to Minneapolis. Thornes is currently accepting applications for a new student representative.A press release has been posted on the city’s website. Calendar:December 15 –reception to honor Tim Reed for his service as mayor January 10 –legislative session begins January 14 –hang posters January 24 –Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Award Program presentation at City Council Meeting Adjourn:A motion was made by Hamer, seconded by Rahman to adjourn at 10:25 am.
