A meeting of the Brookings Sustainability council was held Wednesday, June 12, 2019 at the Brookings
City & County government Center at 4:00 with the following members.
Present: Mike Lockrem, Robert McGrath, Paul Peterson, Jennifer McLaughlin, Robin Buterbaugh, Shelly
Brandenburger, Jane Hagland, Stephanie Aure (phone) . City Staff: Jacob Meshke
Absent: Betty Beer and Norma Nusz Chandler.
I. The meeting was called to order by chair Jennifer McLaughlin at 4:02 pm.
II. Minutes from March 13 meeting; motion made, approved and passed.
III. Agenda approval; motion made, approved and passed with the addition of audience proposal
added to end of agenda (see bullet VIII).
IV. Brookings City Storm water plan discussion with Jackie Lanning & Bret Henning
a. Key focus was community outreach media
b. BMU insert flier
c. Upcoming Construction site communication
d. Business stormwater communication and tracking volunteer events
e. Upcoming City Projects: Arrowhead pond, city/county parking lot
f. Discussion with group on Stormwater inlet and cover painting options
V. Student Position: New vacant position (application going out on social media)
VI. Updates/reports with Sub‐committees
a. Energy: Jennifer McLaughlin update that the Energy committee meeting with BMU
week of June 20, 2019.
b. Local Foods: Shelly Brandenburger updated group of intent to review city ordinances to
isolate those that have relevance to growing food on personal property. Food Co‐op has
a 9‐individual Development Board.
c. Marketing & Communication: Updated group with status of zero (0) sustainability
award nomination.
i. Motion by Stephanie A. to extend nominations to July 1, seconded by Robert M.
and motion passed.
d. Solid Waste: Bob McGrath discussed group work on waste & recycling survey.
Members have been in contact with the waste to energy facility, Prairie Lakes Municipal
Solid Waste Authority in Perham, MN to establish a facility visit and tour.
VII. Update from committee Liaisons.
a. Brookings Domestic Abuse shelter is accepting clothes donations.
b. Critical Mass bike ride led by Jennifer M. held on Friday, June 28th.
c. City Activity – Jacob Meshke
i. Electric Car Charging: City will be applying for grant: Joint Power Association
ii. Park & Recreation: Using new acrylic polymer in flower pots has resulted in less
water use by Parks programs.
VIII. Audience Speaker: Ken ( ) Discussion on need for a north fire station.
a. Motion to make agenda item for next meeting, approved and passed.
IX. Motion to Adjourn (~5:15 pm) ‐ passed
