HomeMy WebLinkAboutM1999_11_17Mayor's Advisory Committee for People with Disabilities November 17, 1999 A meeting of the Mayor's Advisory Committee for People with Disabilities was held on Wednesday, November 17, 1999 at 9:00 a.m. Present: David Hoyt, Emily Bennett, Kay Cutler, Kurt Cogswell, Nancy Hartenhoff. Absent: Amy Fry, Allen & Lynda Muller, Jennifer Kampmann, Kristi Bloom, Marla Muxen, and David Bertelson. 1. Chairperson Cogswell called the meeting to order. 2. Adoption of agenda. 3. Approval of minutes. 4. Announcements/Correspondence 5. Schedule next meeting: Thursday, December 9th at 9:00 a.m. 6. Wrap-up discussion regarding National Disability Employment Awareness Month (October) activities. Cogswell noted the articles in the Collegian and Register. Presentation to the Governor's Awards nominees went very well. Update on job shadowing project. Hoyt reported that he had not heard from Muxen on the possibility of student volunteers for the project. The school district is making progress and hopes to provide more variety of experiences through the Career Learning Services. 8. Transportation for children with disabilities. Cogswell met with Don Boone, Volunteer Service Bank, about the need for an accessible van to transport individuals to Sioux Falls for various medical treatment. He also plans to meet with Lloyd Hansen, Chairman of the Brookings Area Transit Authority, regarding the project. Funding will be needed.to secure the van and pay for upkeep. The volunteer service bank could provide the drivers. An organization is needed to be the owner of the van. There is not currently an accessible van available for out-of-town use and people are having to lay down in inaccessible vans to be transported. There is a shortage of volunteer drivers. Distribution of a flyer through SDSU channels offering to visit with groups about the need/volunteers was suggested. Using the Chamber ad as an advertising source was also suggested. Fundraising sources: local car dealerships, Larson Foundation, area churches, Rainbow Play Systems (youth component), Brookings Hospital, Brookings Clinic. (Hartenhoff arrived) ADDITION: Jolene Dunbar and Megan Jones from Family Community Career Leadership America (FCCLA) were present atthe invitation of David Hoyt. He had spoken with them regardingtheir interest in volunteeringfor Committee projects, specifically the Barrier Awareness Month. Dunbar explained this is the 4th year for the program in Brookings. They currently have 99 paid members and they want to provide community services (Pals program at Brookview, Safety Fair at Hillcrest). The students in this program are able to leave classes to participate in volunteer activities. They expressed a strong interest in assisting with a "Disability Awareness Fair". Earlier in March would be better for the students' schedules. Other activities they might be interested in would be the Wheelchair Clinic and the Summer Arts Festival. (idunbar@bpsce.org) 9. Presentations. No report 10. Report on meeting with Multiplex representatives. Members of the Mayor's ADA Task Force met with Banner and Associates representatives regarding proposed modifications to the Arena and construction plans of the future annex. Those participating were Kurt Cogswell, Nancy Hartenhoff, Fred Rittershaus, Jerry Raabe, and Maree Larson. 11. ADA Coordinator's Report. Submitted by Shari Dunn
