Cogswell also met with Eugene Butler, Disability Coordinator at SDSU. 5. Schedule next meetin. Thursday, November 4, 1999 at 9:00 a.m. 6. Accessibility Evaluation Report. Cogswell, Hartenhoff and Dunn met on September 23, 1999 to review and clarify the report. Cogswell plans to present the final report at an upcoming meeting the Summer Arts Festival Committee. National Disability Employment Awareness Month. Bennett reported that the Brookings Register plans to run a feature article on a person with a disability who has experienced success in an employment situation. Advertisements promoting the October event are planned on the same day the article runs. (Bertelson/A. Muller) Motion to expend funds to pay for two advertisements in the Brookings Register. All present voted yes; motion carried. Eugene Butler is presenting information regarding people with disabilities to SDSU classes and the participation of a committee member would be helpful. Bennett reported that according to Rehabilitation Services, the schools are responsible for securingjob coaches. The Career Learning Center doesn't do job coaching. (Hoyt arrived at 9:25 a.m.) Bennett advised Hoyt that according to Bernie Grimey, the school district needs to pursue the job coaches. Hoyt said the School District would like to see more kids doing "job shadowing" for exposure to a variety of work experiences as a step before an actual job experience with coaches. He also wants to try to broaden the variety of the short-term exposure experiences for the kids. He does have a list of things that the kids are interested in. Muxen suggested this could be a project for Career Counseling students and an ongoing system of providing job coaches could possibly be created from this. Muxen will speak to the instructor. Mayor's Advisory Committee for People with Disabilities October 14, 1999 Bennett thought the shadowing idea was excellent. Potential problems she could see included liability, people are too busy and assistance for the children (possibly assign shadowing supervisor for each student). The goals are to provide kids an exposure to the work force, give them job skills and an understanding what a job is all about. Employers would be asked to free up 2 to 3 hours of their time to give kids this opportunity. Giving a program to local service groups about this project was suggested. 8. Governor's Awards Nominations. Richard Anderson and Terry Sween were nominated for the Outstanding Employee with a Disability award. Falcon Plastics and Comfort Windows and Door were nominated for the employer award. Cogswell volunteered to write the proclamations to be read by the Mayor at the November 1St City Council meeting. Dunn will send letters of invitation to the nominees and prepare a press release. 9. Transportation for Children with Disabilities. Transportation for people with disabilities in town and to medical appointments in Sioux Falls is a concern. Contacting the volunteer service bank about the availability or need for volunteers was discussed. An article in the Collegian or posters on campus was suggested. Knowing the desired qualifications for driver volunteers is needed. Hoyt reported there is a problem crossing area north of the intersection of 17th Avenue South and 12th Street South. Talking to the Traffic Safety Committee was recommended. 9A. Chamber Advertisements. Dunn had been preparing the advertisement for the Chamber newsletter on a monthly basis. She has asked for a committee member to take on that responsibility. Cogswell volunteered. Another responsibility the committee has is to give presentations to various groups about itself and the Americans with Disabilities Act. The committee owns a large quantity of presentation material. Dunn was asked to bring some of the material to the next meeting. Bertelson volunteered to assist in preparing material for powerpoint presentations. Possible presentation topics: ♦ Contractor's Workshop (Mullers) ♦ Bathrooms e Doors s parking e Overview of the ADA Committee overview 10. ADA Coordinator's Report. No report. Meeting adjourned at 10:40 a.m. Submitted by Shari Dunn
