HomeMy WebLinkAboutM1999_06_10Mayor's Advisory Committee for People with Disabilities June 10th1999 A meeting of the Mayor's Advisory Committee for People with Disabilities was held on Thursday, June 10th', 1999 at 9:00 a.m. Members present: Aimee Baltezore, Emily Bennett, David Hoyt, David Bertelson, Kay Cutler, Jennifer Kampmann, Nancy Hartenhoff, Linda Muller, Marla Muxen (by the skin of her teeth), and Kurt Cogswell. Absent: Kristi Bloom, Allen Muller, and Shelly Pedersen. 1. Chairperson Hartenhoff called the meeting to order at 9:00 a.m. 2. The agenda was adopted as printed. 3. Minutes. Kay Cutler attended the contractor's workshop. (Bertleson/Baltezore) M/S/P to approve the May 13t11 1999 minutes as corrected. 4. Announcements/Correspondence: None. 5. Schedule next meeting. Thursday, July 15th at 9:00 a.m. 6. Wrap-up Reports: A. Committee training: The consensus was that the evening was valuable and useful. B. Contractor's Workshop: Another good session, attended by roughly two dozen contractors, mostly representing frons likely to undertake smaller projects (i.e., individual homes or remodeling small businesses.) 7. Updates. A. Wheelchair Clinic -June 26t1, : Baltezore attended meetings of the Clinic organizing committee. She anticipates a very well -organized and well -attended function. Advisory committee members were asked to serve as volunteers, and to solicit others for this service. Volunteers should call Baltezore. B. Advocacy outreach: Cogswell attended the last three meetings of the Brookings Arts Festival Cominittee. The issue of bus service for the disabled was resolved (BAFC will assume full responsibility.) The BAFC agreed that we should go ahead with a survey of this summer's festival as regards ADA compliance and general accessibility. Hartenhoff, Hoyt, Bertleson, and Cogswell tentatively scheduled a meeting for Thursday, July 1" at 9:00 (if Dunn can attend then) to prepare guidelines for conducting the survey. Finally, the BAFC agreed to fund the rental of wheelchairs for this surnmer's festival, and to provide an awning and space for the chairs on First Avenue near the south information booth. We will provide staffing. Volunteers are needed. Cogswell will mercilessly harass committee members if necessary to obtain sufficient staffing. Hartenhoff suggested that we could survey people at our site and the nearby drop off point of the bus for the disabled regarding general festival accessibility. The committee agreed that this was an excellent idea. Cogswell suggested that the Committee could start a web site devoted to publicizing Committee activities and providing links to services for the disabled. The Committee agreed that this should be discussed with Dunn. C. Local affiliate training July: Several Committee members expressed interest in attending the training session in Chamberlain, assuming that scrambled sunnner schedules permit such attendance. 8. Discussion and action on ABLE Award nominations: The new Brookings Middle School, Hyvee, the Better Homes and Gardens realtors' office, and Campus Hair were nominated. Committee members will inspect each nominee before the next meeting, and come prepared to vote. 9. Discussion and action on City budget re nest: Approved (Hoyt/Bertleson). 10.
