HomeMy WebLinkAboutM1999_01_14Mayor's Advisory Committee for People with Disabilities January 14, 1999 A meeting of the Brookings Advisory Committee for People with Disabilities was held on Thursday, January 14, 1999 at 10:30 a.m. in Brookings City Hall. Members present: Emily Bennett, Kurt Cogswell, Nancy Hartenhoff, Marla Muxen, Allen and Lynda Muller, David Bertelson, Aimee Baltezore and Kay Cutler. Shelley Pederson, Kristi Bloom and David Hoyt were absent. 1. Kay Cutler, Aimee Baltezore, and Allen and Lynda Muller were welcomed to the committee. 2. Chairperson Hartenhoff called the meeting to order. 3. A enda. (Bertelson/Muxen) M/S/P to approve the agenda. 4. Minutes. (Cogswell/Bennett) M/S/P to approve the December 10, 1998 minutes. 5. Announcements/Calendar/Correspondence. - Local Activity Fund Guidelines were distributed. - Youth Leadership Forum, August 2.5, 1999, was discussed. - Ms. Wheelchair SD 1999 was discussed. 6. Next Meeting. Thursday, February 11 at 10:00 a.m. Budget Report. Dunn presented a final report of expenditures for 1998. 8. Barrier Awareness Day Report. Marla Muxen is coordinating this year's event. She needs to know what dates the school would like to hold the event. It will be held for third graders at each of the elementary schools. A display was also set up. She will purchase the necessary supplies for the activities. She will request volunteers at the next meeting. Accessible Transportation - Arts Festival 1999. David Hoyt attended an arts festival committee meeting in January. He sent a report indicating he would recommend that the Mayor's Committee continue to have representatives attend Arts Festival Committee meetings to maintain a flow of communication and ideas. This might prevent us from having some last-minute concerns regarding accessibility issues for this year's Festival. He felt members would be good to work with if we can be available to address accessibility issues when they arise. The Arts Festival asked why the fares from the accessible bus weren't turned over to the other bus company. They also expressed interest in having the committee sponsor accessible transportation again this year. Muxen offered to go to meetings with Hoyt. Cogswell suggested the idea about providing wheelchairs be discussed at the next Arts Festival meeting. It would cost $10 per chair for two days from a firm in Madison. 10. 1999 Committee Calendar of Events. Dunn reviewed a draft calendar of events for the year. Mayor's Advisory Committee for People with Disabilities January 14, 1999 Workshop ideas: A. For contractors on the ADA. B. Advocacy workshop for people with disabilities in the fall. Rights and responsibilities under the ADA. Hartenhoff and Cogswell will work on workshop topics. Cutler said the Parent Connection is holding a conference in July that the committee could be involved in. She will check. 11. Homeshow Booth Subcommittee. Hartenhoff and Bennett offered to work on the booth. Allen Muller commented that the Family Fun Fair will be held in the Armory this spring. 12. Discussion and Possible Recommendation on Committee Size. The committee has been up to 13 members in size. There are currently two vacancies. Dunn asked the committee to consider reducing the size to 11 members. Tabled until the February meeting, 13. Committee Review of New Material. Members are asked to bring information on disability -related issues to share. 14. Election of Vice Chairperson. (Bertelson/Muxen) Motion to nominate David Hoyt as vice chairperson, All present voted yes; motion carried. 15. City ADA Coordinator's Report. Shari Dunn presented the following report: — She was contacted by the director of the Domestic Abuse Shelter to evaluate and discuss program accessibility. — An individual with a disability contacted Dunn regarding possible discriminatory acts by local employers. — The HUD Federal office in Sioux Falls contacted Dunn to obtain disability rights procedures of the Human Rights Committee. — Nancy Olson, Family Support Program, is working with a local family to design an accessible bathroom in their home. She contacted Duni for assistance. — Hartenhoff, Bertelson and Dunn toured the Multiplex facility on December 1.8`x'. They were concerned how the ticket counter has been designed. The lowered (36") portion is in a separate area from the main ticket window. There did not appear to be an automatic opener for the front door. Dunn will contact the manager for more information.
