November 31, 2000 Summary
A meeting of the Brookings Advisory Committee for People who have
Disabilities was held on Friday, November 3, 2000 at 9:00 a.m. in City Hall.
Present: Kurt Cogswell, Nancy Hartenhoff, Roger Seas, Emily Bennett and
Maria Muxen. Absent: Amy Fry, Kay Cutler, Lynda & Allen Muller, David
Hoyt, David Bertelson.
A quorum was not present. The agenda and minutes of October 16, 2000
were not formally adopted.
Ilancy Schade, SDSU Disability Services Coordinator, was a guest speaker.
She said her top three priorities are to improve the quality of services students
are able to access through the office of Disability Services; to increase visibility
of the Office; and strengthen the working relationship with SDSU faculty. She
plans to hold a series of meetings with members of the faculty and hall
directors. Recent physical improvements on campus include an automatic door
at West Hall and a portable ramp at Administration. She is forming an
advisory board consisting of faculty and students. Bennett volunteered to
participate. There was discussion regarding Ms. Schade serving as an
official liaison to the committee. She indicated she would like to discuss
transportation coordination at a future meeting.
Governor's Awards Nominations — Cogswell volunteered to write the long
nominations for Kay Cheever, Pam Irion and Melania Rosa. Bennett will write
the nomination for Lisa Pierce. Fry will be contacted regarding the United
Retirement Center and JC Penney.
Barrier Awareness — Rather than focus on one week per year, it was suggested
,•eveloping an ongoing program in the schools.
