Able Award
Committee recommends that two Able Awards be presented to United Church of Christ and
Hy -Vee. Linda Muller motioned to approve two awards, Emily Bennett second. Presentation
will take place in City Council room downstairs City Hall on July 231d
Share the Spirit Program
Kurt took an e-mail poll to determine if everyone agrees to cooperate. Motion by Donna
Kornbaum, Second by Amy Fry to cooperate with Share the Spirit. Nancy Schade
commented that the effort could really change things in Brookings. Kurt will be calling
committee members to help in the effort.
Local Affiliates
Linda and Allen Muller attended local affiliate meeting and reported that as of October 1,
2001 there will no longer be a local affiliate. There will continue to be a regional in
Colorado. Kurt thinks it would be nice to at least have an annual or semi-annual meeting to
discuss issues. Linda reported that Sioux Falls may be regulating parking striping to ensure
that spots are marked properly. Linda talked about an accessibility kit, which includes items
such as a measuring tape, wood blocks, and pressure tester that would be helpful to the
committee. Kurt thinks that the committee does have one but will check with Shari for sure.
There might be funds in budget to purchase new one.
Kids on Block Program
Kurt and the committee think that having the puppets in the community would be a good way
to especially expand Barrier Awareness Day. They could be used for other purposes as well
in our community but committee would not want to be owners/operators. Linda suggested
either Easter Seals or Brookings Interagency. Linda volunteered to talk with Sheri to inquire
what was proposed. Marla thinks it would be a good resource for fund raising.
{Terri Jewel
Gerri may be a potential workshop speaker rather than presenting for Disability Awareness
Month. Nancy Schade will visit with Kris Francesca about presenting in October. She is a
comedian and will be in Sioux Falls that month. She may be able to get a better rate if she
comes then.
Summer Arts Festival
Amy Fry has not been able to attend the last two meetings. Will try to attend next meeting.
Kurt did say that there would not be a wheelchair booth. There will be 1-2 chairs at each
informational booth. He said we would not have to staff a booth then.
ADA Anniversary
Committee discussed what to do for the anniversary. We talked about marquees, newspaper
articles, and PSA's. Kurt and Marla agreed to meet to discuss PSA's.
Budget 2002 Changes
More money for board development and training and public education dissemination of
materials. Committee agreed that bringing a speaker in would be more effective than sending
someone from the committee out. Committee will cut back to 3-4 times a year in the
Chamber News. Committee will not be able kick in money for the outdoor home show but
will continue to have a booth at home show. Kurt voiced concern over the fact that it is a
home show and we really don't fit in with what we've done so far. Emily suggested calling
companies who provide accessible items for the home to find out if they would be willing to
come to the show. There is a problem with staffing too and the committee is wondering if we
should have more community involvement such as high school students?
Materials Dissemination
Kurt proposed disseminating materials by turning information into PSA blurbs on an on-
going basis. Nancy Schade asked if this could be coordinated with SDSU and putting it on
the SDSU web site. Nancy volunteered to work with Kurt on this.
No ADA Coordinators Report
Shari Thornes did include an ADA report in our packet.
Nancy Schade did mention Catch the Wave at SDSU. She explained that it was a workshop
for students, parents, teachers, etc. who are involved with transitioning from high school to
college. SDSU Stride is still trying to arrange an etiquette workshop.
