/\meeting of the Brookings Advisory Committee for People with Disabilities was held on
Thursday, March l,2OOl ot8:OOo.m.|nCity Hall. Members present: Kurt Cogswell,
Nancy Hartenhoff, Lynda and Allen Muller, David Bertelson, Maria Muxen, Emily Bennett,
and Roger Seas. Absent members: Sue Parrott, Dona Kornboom,Amy Fry, and Kay
CuMer, Shari Dunn, City Clerk, was present.
Chairman Cogswell called the meeting toorder at 8:00o� Disability awareness was
added tothe agenda. The February l,2OOl minutes were approved. Next meeting —
Thursday, April 5th ut8:OOmxn.
Discussion regarding resources, advocacy and education available for people with
disabilities. Donito Weets, o client from Vocational RehobOUoMm\ had requested on
opportunity to visit with the committee about this issue. Nb. Weets was not present at the
meeting.
Update and Distribution of ADA Contractor Books. Cogswell, Hortenhoffand 8edebon
agreed to meet as a subcommittee to discuss the issue.
City Council ' /City Manager Strategic Planning Process. Thornes reported that the City
Manager is seeking input from city staff and citizen advisory committees on goals for
2002 to be discussed during o strategic planning process with the City Council. Cogswell
asked members to send ideas hohim prior Yothe next meeting.
Barrier Awareness Days. A press release will be issued prior Yothe event Cogswell

Homeshow. Volunteers were needed to staff the booth on March 9 lQ and 11.
Cogswell distributed o sign-up sheet Thornes will contact the Multiplex about the use of
tables and chairs. Other needs discussed: table skirting, banner, easel with poster on
vision screening.
Transportation Issues. BATA has agreed tnlease the van tothe Volunteer Service Bank.
The VSB will provide the drivers nnovolunteer basis. The plan |sfostart small with
options toexpand the service otolater date. There isone wheelchair tie down space in
the van. It could be modified to add more spaces. The service will pick upoutside the
city ofBrookings h/bring into town ortransport people out ofBrookings. The service
cannot duplicate any services already existing in Brookings. The service |sk» be used for
medically related needs. |twould beimportant toidentify how many need the service for
non -medically ns|oh*d needs. |twas noted that the VSB doesn't want hm own the von. It
lsalso easier toget volunteers than paid drivers. The VSB pays for gas. They plan to
increase their United YYoy request.
Disability Etiquette Workshop. The 3D5UStride organization bpreparing workshops on
disability etiquette for 3DSUstaff. |fthe Committee gives the organization enough
advance notice they could provide training opportunities |nthe fall of2OOl.
Summer Arts Festival. Hortemhoffoffered ioattend the Arts Festival Committee
meetings. She also plans to continue work on a Festival and Fairs guide.
