HomeMy WebLinkAboutM2004_12_03oo r t, '-i.�M December f 1% A meeting of the Brookings Committee for People who have Disabilities was held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, December 3, 2004 in the Brookings City Hall with the following members present`. Kurt Cogswell, Nancy Hartenhoff-Crooks, Angie Rempfer David Bertelson, Dona Kornbaum & Lisa Sonnenburg. Members not present: Jennifer Mendoza, Victoria Riggs, Emily Bennett, Kristie Ching and Lois Hatton. Kurt called the meeting to order at 2:00 p.m. The November minutes were amended and approved. Lexi meeting of the committee is scheduled for Friday, January 14, 2004 @ 2 p.m. Governor's Awards Dominations: Recipients of the awards are Ron's Auto and possibly the Ram Pub. Kurt will contact Career Advantage to see if they are nominating the Ram Pub. On December 21, 2004, the awards will presented by the Mayor to the recipients and the proclamations must be turned into Pierre by December 17, 2004. Chamber Subcommittee Report: The subcommittee, Vicky, Emily, Dona and Lisa, met to discuss making modifications to the Visitor's Guide and area businesses who would be interested in accessibility. The Visitor's Guide already has a list of all the Brookings businesses and the subcommittee would see about adding handicap symbols. The subcommittee would also like to get into groups to talk to the businesses about signage, accessibility, etc. Frost Arena: Nancy talked to Rob Peterson re: accessibility. Rob said they are going to top load seating because of security and crowd control. There is accessible seating, but Dona said the railing is in the line of people's vision. Kurt suggested a set up like the Ice Arena as well as a site visit. Nancy will talk to Rob with further before we set up a site visit. If committee visits the Arena, Lisa will ask one of her clients in a wheelchair to be apart of the visit for more accurate input. Election of Officers: Kurt is the designated Chair, David is the designated Co -Chair, and Lisa is the designated Recorder. ADA Coordinator's Reiaort/Announcements° Shari reported the City Council would like to do a study on utilities and infrastructure based on the Design Works Streetscape project. There will be a training video called, "The Ten Commandments" for the superintendents. There will also be an accessibility review of the six polling sites before the April election. Banner and Associates is doing the plan for the Hillcrest Aquatic Center. A subcommittee will review the plans for accessibility. David, Jen and Lisa are up for re-election. Dona added that when she goes walking, she can see the curbs need repairs as they are unstable, 7th & Main in particular. Shari will check into this.
