HomeMy WebLinkAboutM2004_07_09Brookings Committee for People who have Disabilities July 9, 2004 The Brookings Committee for People who have Disabilites meeting was called to order by acting chair Dave Bertelson at 2 p.m. Friday, July 9 in the City Hall meeting room. Victoria Riggs was designated as recorder. Present were Shari Thornes, Dave Bertelson, Emily Bennett, Kristie Ching, Dona Kornbaum, Lois Hatton, Jennifer Mendoza, Nancy Hartenhoff-Crooks, and Victoria Riggs. Absent were Kurt Cogswell, Lisa Sonnenberg, and Angie (Klein). Changes in the agenda were made: the minutes from the June meeting were not available for approval and will be approved at the next meeting; two changes in the order of agenda items were made. Agenda was adopted. The next committee meeting is scheduled for Aug. 13, 2004, at 2 p.m. ADA Coordinator's report: Shari Thornes reported that the legality of the building permit concept was questioned by the city manager. The city attorney is giving it further review. The 2005 Budget review begins in August. Due to different funding requests, the council may want to talk to individual members of the committee. Plans are being researched for improvements at the city pool; the new Senior Center plans have been reviewed and are approved. Accommodations for Safety Town went well. Emergency preparations for persons with disabilities are being looked into. The commemoration of the ADA anniversary in conjunction with the city band concert on Aug. 25 was coordinated. Shari Thornes and Emily Bennett shared information regarding the committee's application for the National Organization on Disability Award. Kurt Cogswell has offered to write the application. A $10,000. first prize is offered. Emily Bennett and Lois Hatton shared information from a recent NAMI meeting regarding the proposal to construct a residential unit in Brookings for persons with a mental illness to assist them with independent living. Emily Bennett suggested that perhaps if the committee won an award from the National Organization competition that it could be considered to assist with such a residential unit. Committee members dismissed to make site visits to the two nominees for the ABLE Award. After visiting the Holiday Inn Express and Applebee's, and consulting with management at both establishments, the committee unanimously decided to present the award to both. Emily Bennett will make arrangements for the clock plaques to be prepared for presentation at the city council meeting at 5:30 p.m. on July 27, 2004.
