HomeMy WebLinkAboutM2004_04_02Brookings Committee for People who have Disabilities April A meeting of the Brookings Committee for People who have Disabilities was held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, April 2, 2004 in the Brookings City Hall with the following members present: Kurt Cogswell, Jennifer Mendoza, Victoria Riggs, Emily Bennett, Nancy Hartenhoff-Crooks, Lois Hatton, Angie Klein & Lisa Sonnenburg. Members not present: David Bertelson, Kristie Ching, Dona Kornbaum. Committee Guests: Megan Juhnke & Kenneth Myers Kurt Called the meeting to order at 2:00 p.m. The February minutes were amended and approved. Next meeting of the committee is scheduled for Friday, May 14, 2004 @ 2 p.m. Technical Assistance Request ® Driver's License Exam Office: Shari gave an updated report on the Driver's License Exam Office located at The Old Sanctuary. Kurt visited the site and reported that the changes made would be easy, but expensive. Workshop update with Pat Going, ADA Technical Assistance Center: Pat Going from the ADA Technical Assistance Center will be coming to Brookings April 20-22. Pat will meet with the Multi - District Class on the 215', which will be considered the "City Day" of workshops. Pat will also teach etiquette training to BAHRA (Brookings Area Human Resources Association). On the 22nd, Pat will work with students with disabilities from SDSU on interviewing skills, etc. This will be considered "SDSU Day." The committee will plan a social dinner with Pat on the 22nd. Jen will assist Nancy with chauffeuring Pat around Brookings. Subcommittee Report and Possible Recommendations on Permit Review: Vicky reported that she spoke with Brad, the City Inspector in Rapid City. He said they do require specifications in place before they give a building permit. He said under the ANSI Code, we would be covered. He suggested to go with ANSI Code over ADAAG so the city would not be held liable for lawsuits. A subcommittee was formed to write up a draft plan to be shown to Shelly Pfaff and Pat Going to gain their expertise in this area. Barrier Awareness Days (March 2004): Emily reported that Barrier Awareness Days went very well. Emily suggested a refresher activity be done for junior high students for next year. ADA Coordinator's Report/Announcements: Shari reported on the summer recreational programs and accommodations. The Downtown Streetscape Process is going well. Design Works, Inc. was selected for the project and will be partnering with CDI to develop a master plan. There is a conference call scheduled for April 8, 2004 @ 12pm. Alan Lanning is the new City Manager of Brookings. The Senior Center plans are underway and will be reviewed. Parking accessibility for Arts in the Park is arranged for this year's event. Dick Olson will possibly be doing sensitivity training/customer service for businesses. Kurt will contact Dick Olson. __ a ♦a • -• s ii
