HomeMy WebLinkAboutM2004_02_06Brookings Committee for People who have Disabilities February 6, 2004 A meeting of the Brookings Committee for People who have Disabilities was held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, February 6, 2004 in the Brookings City Hall with the following members present: Kurt Cogswell, David Bertelson, Jennifer Mendoza, Kristie Ching, Victoria Riggs, Emily Bennett, & Lisa Sonnenburg. Members not present:, Nancy Hartenhoff-Crooks, Dona Kornbaum, Lois Hatton, & Angie Klein. Cogswell Called the meeting to order at 2:00 p.m. The January minutes were amended and approved. Next meting of the committee is scheduled for Friday, March 5, 2004 @ 2 p.m. Approval of the 2003 Annual Report: Thornes inserted the current bylaws, expenditure report, and made some formatting changes. Emily motioned to accept the annual report. Jennifer seconds the motion. The motion was passed. Workshop Update with Pat Going, ADA Technical Assistance Center: Pat Going from the ADA Technical Assistance Center will be coming to Brookings April 20-22. Pat will meet with the Multi -District Class on the 21't, which will be considered the "City Day" of workshops. Pat will also teach etiquette training to BAHRA (Brookings Area Human Resources Association). On the 22 �, Pat will work with students with disabilities from SDSU on interviewing skills, etc. This will be considered "SDSU Day." Subcommittee Report and Possible Recommendations on Permit Review: Vicky reported that she spoke with the City Inspector in Rapid City. He said they do require specifications in place before they give a building permit. He said under the ANSY Code, we would be covered. He suggested to go with ANSY Code over ADAG so the city would not be held liable for lawsuits. Emily had somewhat of a different report. Shari will visit with the City Engineer regarding the ANSY Code. Vicky will contact the City Inspector in Rapid City with further questions. Jennifer will get in contact with Pat. Summer Arts Festival Parking: Kurt spoke with Dan Kemp and he said it would be a good idea to reserve 5th St. & Ft. Ave. for parking. He will talk to the Arts in the Park Committee. Barrier Awareness Days (March 2004): Emily reported that Barrier Awareness Days is scheduled for March 15 at Hillcrest from 1-2p.m., Central's 5`' St. Gym on March 16t" from 1-2p.m., and at Medary on March 18 from 1-2p.m. ADA Coordinator's Report/Announcements: Shari reported on the Governor's Award winners, no winners from Brookings. The committee will develop a subcommittee to review plans for the Senior Citizens Center. Committee will review the website to see if there should be changes and/or updates. Bonnie Foster is Shari's new Assistant. Committee will develop a new training presentation for employers for NDEAM and present it to businesses as well as bring food. Committee's goal is to set up 5 presentations to employers during the month of October. Kurt sent out information for Mitchell to assist them with forming their new committee.
