HomeMy WebLinkAboutM2004_01_16Jan i i'004 A meeting of the Brookings Committee for People who have Disabilities was held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, January 16, 2004 in the Brookings City Hall with the following members present: Kurt Cogswell, Jennifer Mendoza, Emily Bennett, Nancy Hartenhoff-Cooks, Victoria Riggs, Donna Kornbaum, and David Bertelson. Sari Thornes, Brookings City Clerk and ADA coordinator, was also present. Members not present: Lois Hatton, Lisa Sonnenburg, and Kristie Ching. Chair Kurt Cogswell called the meeting to order at 2:00 p.m. The minutes of the December 2003 meeting were approved. Jennifer Mendoza was designated as recorder. The January 2004 agenda was approved. The next meeting of the committee is scheduled for Friday, February 6th, 2004. At 2:00. Nominating Committee Deport Kurt Cogswell was nominated to continue serving as Chairman. Motion was made by Nancy Hartenhoff. Victoria Riggs seconded the motion. Motion passed with committee in entire agreement. Dave Bertelson was nominated to continue serving as Vice president. Motion was made by Kurt Cogswell and Nancy seconded the motion. Motion was passed with committee in entire agreement. Annual Report to City Council There was discussion in the committee to eliminate our performance measures. It was brought to the committee's attention that other committees were no longer tracking such data. Committee was in agreement to eliminate performance measures for the report, but to continue tracking number of donated hours. Shari Thornes provided information regarding the New City Manager, Allen Fertis. Mr. Fertis will be taking office in April 2004. The committee was in agreement that they would invite Mr. Fertis to a committee meeting to welcome him. Workshop opportunities in April with Pat Going, ADA Technical Assistance Center Nancy Hartenhoff provided the committee with the update. Nancy had been in contact with Mr. Pat Going and mentioned that he is very excited to visit and educate not only the Brookings area, but surrounding areas as well. Nancy is arranging for several educational workshops to take place in neighboring areas Watertown, Mitchell and Brookings. This workshop opportunity is coming along nicely and is going to be a great opportunity to educate communities. Arts Festival- Status on Complaint Kurt Cogswell informed the committee that the Arts Festival will have the total of 40 handicap parking spots. This is twice as many as last year. Review Goals for 2004 The committee was in agreement to continue on with the same goals Barrier Awareness Days (March 2004) Emily updated the committee on the Barrier Awareness Event. Emily discussed the purpose of the event and how much fun it is to watch. No future reporting at this time. Transportation for people with Disabilities Victoria brought to the committees attention of an individual who is needed a transportation service on the weekends. Committee openly discussed the issue and came to an agreement that Victoria would attend a Public Transportation meeting. ADA Coordinator's Report Shari Thornes updated the committee on a recent Public Library concern. The Library will monitor where future flyers are posted. Shari also provided the committee information regarding the NAVA (Help America Vote Act). There must to be a machine at every polling site. The machine is a touch screen that has been provided to the county by a grant. Announcements/ Correspondence/ Calendar Shari Thrones discussed the possible idea that the committee must oversee every blue print that private contractors present to the city for a permit. This would allow the committee to help advocate for all new permits assigned to be in compliance with ADA regulations. Jennifer, Victoria and Emily were assigned possible contact people and were asked to research this before next meeting. The meeting was adjourned at 4:30p,. Submitted by Jennifer Mendoza
