A meeting for the Brookings Committee for People who Have Disabilities was held at
2:OOp.m. on Friday, December 2, 2005 in the Brookings City Hall with the following
members present: Kurt Cogswell, Emily Bennett, Dona Kornbaum, Jessie
Kuechenmeister, Vickie Riggs, Dave Bertelson, Kristie Ching and Lisa Sonnenburg.
Members not present: Nancy Hartenhoff-Crooks & Lois Hatton.
New Member — Dr. Tom Shaffer WELCOME ABOARD TOM!!!
Next meeting of the committee is scheduled for Friday, January 13, 2005 at 2p.m.
Updates:
A) Special Olympics Involvement - Jessie contacted Kristen, the Special Olympic
Organizer and is waiting for a reply. Jessie will contact the State Office again.
Starting in January, Special Olympics Basketball and Cheerleading will start.
B) Governor's Awards -Submission to State — All letters are in and will be sent by
Shari.
New Business:
A) Annual Report — Final report is due by February 15t11. Sub -Committee will
meet on Wednesday, December 28, 2005 at City Hall, 2:OOp.m.
B) Year End Budget — Committee confirmation of budget.
C) Committee Member Terms — Kristie, Emily, Kurt, Lois, Nancy up for
reappointment.
D) Local Fines for Violation of Accessible Parking — Shari reported Sioux Valley
Clinic to put in signage with fines. The fine is $25, this is low. Look at a
maximum fine. Chief Tim is looking into this.
E) Frost Arena — Dona reported that a gentleman with a cane tried to get into the
bleachers and it took two people to assist hien. Dona suggested signs for the
general public to see. People with general admission do not know there is
accessible seating there.
F) Daktronics Presentation — Emily and Lisa reported that the sub -committee
presented information (on hiring persons with disabilities) and a video
(The Ten Commandments) to 80 Supervisors at Daktronics, followed with a
question and answer. Door prizes were given away to the Supervisors who
asked the questions. The presentation went very well and there may be one
more given to the Manufacturing Supervisors.
G) Election of Officers — Chair Person; Kurt Cogswell, Vice Chair Person;
Dave Bertelsen, Secretary; Lisa Sonnenburg
ADA Coordinator's Report:
• New liquor store space to move to mall. No public restrooms.
• Downtown streetscape project —Shari —Project should move forward.
• City Engineer attended the conference in SF with ADA. The Engineers
used wheelchairs to move around in downtown Sioux Falls. The Engineers
said it was a "big eye opener."
• Mayor's Christmas Party on December 16"' at the Performing Arts Center.
■ Elevator out of commission at City Hall during a Council meeting. Shari
said she needs immediate notification.
■ Candles and space heaters eliminated at City Hall.
• Accessible dock project moving forward at Lake Campbell.
■ Citizen complaint about the water pressure.
Announcements/Correspondence/Calendar:
A) "Facility Access Under the ADA -How to Prioritize Improvements" — Shari
would like to purchase a software program. Jeff Munce could utilize and
possibly go to Sioux Falls as a committee.
B) Rocky Mountain Disability & Business Technical Assistance Center Packet
C) National Organization on Disability -Disaster Readiness Tips
D) Websites..... www.adaportal.org
