HomeMy WebLinkAboutM2006_09_22Brookings Committee for People who have Disabilities September 22, 2006 A meeting for the Brookings Committee for People who Have Disabilities was held at 2:OOp.m. on Friday September 22, 2006 in the Brookings City Hall with the following members present: Kurt Cogswell, Emily Bennett, Vickie Riggs, Dona Kornbaum, Dave Bertelson, Jessie Kuechenmeister and Lisa Sonnenburg. Members not present: Nancy Hartenhoff-Crooks and Tom Schaffer. Next meeting of the committee is scheduled for Friday, October 27th, 2006 at 2:30p.m. Wrap-up discussions: A) ADA Anniversary Event — Ice Cream Social; The event went very well, however, attendance was low this year. There is a new Director for the Minicipal Band. We had a couple of committee members there to serve ice cream. B) ABLE Awards; SDSU's Caldwell Hall received the ABLE Award before the City Council. C) T -Shirts & Magnets; Jessie has purchased the shirts and magnets for the committee members. They look great! Thanks Jessie!! ABLE Award Process: Emily reported that the NDEAM Event is coming together. Mike Wahling will hold a session to talk about Social Security Benefits and work as well as the Ticket -To -Work Program. Mike will also address working with students in transition from high school. The luncheon will begin at 11:30am and last until 1:30pm. Kurt will introduce the Committee and Mayor Munsterman. Mayor Munsterman will read the awards and present them to the recipients. Lisa Pierce from Voc. Rehab., will introduce the keynote speaker, Chris Olson. From 1:30pm-about 3pm, there will be a Resource Fair in one of the conference rooms at the Brookings Inn. Brookings Engraving will make the clocks for the recipients. Governor's Awards Nominations: The 2006 Nominations for this year's Governor's Awards are: Brookings Area Transit Authority for the Brookings 2006 Distinguished Service Award. Daktronics for the Outstanding Employer of more than 100 Employees. Pizza Ranch for the Outstanding Employer of less than 100 Employees, Brookings Health System for the Outstanding Public Employer. Kris Warnke for the Outstanding Public Personnel Award. Crystal Deknikker for the Outstanding Employee with a Disability. Melissa DeBoer for the Outstanding Employee with a Disability. Judy Cooley for the Oustanding Citizen with a Disability. Emergency Network: Vickie has suggested that the committee get involved with devising an Emergency Services Plan for Persons with Disabilities, elderly individuals and others with special needs. Vickie recommended that these individuals register with the Brookings Police Department or we may have to get people registered. A subcommittee was formed to work on the Emergency Network as well as to talk about trying to obtain a Mental Health Assisted Living in Brookings. Members on the subcommittee are Jessie, Vickie, Dona, Emily and Lisa. ADA Leadership Network: Shari reported that she spoke with Pat Going and he said that there are 6 states (group of 35 who would like to participate in the Network). There are new ADA related tools "out of the box" for free which consist of a DVD about accommodations and photos. There is a $150,000 to use for various projects. Thus, the wish list developed for people to come up with "wishes" of where they would like to see the money be used. The committee should come up with their wish list and send it to Kurt. ADA Coordinator's ReportNpdates: Southside Park: Has accessible restrooms! Police Department: There will be a new accessible entrance in 2008. Hillcrest Pool/curb ramp: The grade on the ramp is incorrect and must be rebuilt from the street into Hillcrest to make it correct and accessible. Announcements/Correspondence/Calendar: The URC's Child Care Center will be city funded. Meeting adjourned at 2:50pm Minutes submitted by Lisa Sonnenburg
