HomeMy WebLinkAboutM2006_06_01Brookings Committee for People who have Disabilities June 1, 2006 A meeting for the Brookings Committee for People who Have Disabilities was held at 2:OOp.m, on Thursday June 1, 2006 in the Brookings City Hall with the following members present: Kurt Cogswell, Nancy Hartenhoff-Crooks, Emily Bennett, Dona Kornbaum, Dave Bertelson, Kristie Ching, Jessie Kuechenmeister and Lisa Sonnenburg. Members not present: Vickie Riggs, Tom Schaffer, & Lois Hatton. Next meeting of the committee is scheduled for Friday, July 7th, 2006 at 2p.m. Report from Nancy Hartenhoff-Crooks on the National ADA Symposium & Expo Conference: Nancy reported the conference was worthwhile, very diverse and interesting. Nancy highly recommends others attend next year. Nancy attended the Accessible Distance Learning, ADAAG & ABA, Recreational Guidelines, Public Transportation and COSP segments of the Conference. • With the Accessible Distance Learning piece, Debbie Cook, a visually impaired individual, spoke about the new technology that is coming out. • There are changes in rules pertaining to ADAAG and ABA. For example, a person must be able to access the stage from the seating area, parking must be well marked (if parked in alleys, they will be towed), a reduction of seating (1 seat per 150 seats), 48' reach ranges and new ADAAG graphics to make it easier to interpret. ■ Work -Out Facilities were brought up, but ADAAG does not talk about this area as of yet, rather they talk about how to get into the building. ADAAG does not require family restrooms. • St. Louis has made a strong commitment to have accessible transportation. This may be something that more urban cities will do. • COSP is aimed towards college students. Individuals with disabilities would receive assistance with job training, resumes, etc. There is a website with a list of a number of programs that offer internships for individuals with disabilities. ABLE Award Process: SDSU Caldwell Center won the 2006 ABLE Award. Planning for ADA Anniversary Event — July Ice Cream Social: Jessie checked on prices for shirts with the Committee name on there. The cost would be about $25 per shirt. Jessie also checked on the price of magnets, which the committee will purchase and give to the people who attend the event. The ADA Event will be held on Sunday, July 30t" from 6:30-8:30pm at Pioneer Park. 2007 Budget Request: Kurt Cogswell completed the report and it was approved by the Committee. NDEAM: NDEAM will be held at the Brookings Inn on October 12t11. Emily reported that there is a NDEAM Committee that is working on the event. Mike Wahling will present on Transition and Social Security Issues from 9-1 lam. The Awards Luncheon will go from 11:30-1:30pm and the NDEAM Committee would like Mayor Munsterman to present the Awards and speak about the Committee. Emily requested local funds to help pay for the event and the committee agreed to donate $500. Updates: Frost Arena Glass; Can not have the glass because of the glass gets scratched, it will interfere with people seeing the events. Committee talked about filing a complaint with the Department of Justice. Scent -Free Restrooms; There are no more scents in the bathrooms at Wal-Mart. They will also clean at night. There was also an installation of light/fans. Perkins; Shari spoke with the Manager re: a more accessible restroom and he will make the necessary changes. Aquatic Center; The Aquatic Center will have a lift that is independently operable, ADA Coordinator's Report: Automark Voting Machines; These will officially be used in November.
