HomeMy WebLinkAboutM2006_03_03Brookings Committee for People who have Disabilities March 3, 2006 A meeting for the Brookings Committee for People who Have Disabilities was held at 2:00p.m. on Friday, March 3, 2006 in the Brookings City Hall with the following members present: Kurt Cogswell, Nancy Hartenhoff-Crooks, Tom Schaffer, Dona Kornbaum, Dave Bertelsen and Lisa Sonnenburg. Members not present: Vickie Riggs, Emily Bennett, Kristie Ching, Jessie Kuechenmeister & Lois Hatton. Next meeting of the committee is scheduled for Friday, April 14, 2006 at 2p.m. Barrier Awareness DM: Barrier Awareness Days was very successful this year. There was a nice article on the front page of the Register talking about the event. National ADA Symposium & Expo -April 10-12, 2006 -St. Louis:_ Nancy will attend the Expo in St. Louis. Thank you Nancy!!! Action to approve the 2005 annual report to the City Council: The 2005 annual report was approved by the committee. Updates: Frost Arena; Kurt wrote the letter to Dr. Michael Reger to make recommendations for changes to the Frost Arena. Dr. Reger responded to say that he appreciated Kurt's input, etc. However, they will not make the changes (please see the letters). Capital -Line; Kurt also visited Capital Line and made recommendations to the Company. He has not received a response from Capital Line. Kurt will send another letter to consult with Capital Line. First Bank & Trust; Kurt wrote a letter to suggest parking alternatives. Perkins; Committee to set up a meeting with the Manager at Perkins to discuss the women's bathroom. Website Idea; Tom stated when he was looking for resources for his disabled child, he was unsuccessful. He proposed we have a web site for people to access. Tom will look into this. Information for people on the city web site and/or chamber of commerce website. The other alternative would be to have our own website with resources on it. Look into what persons with disabilities are looking for. Tom will be in charge of managing the website. Scent -Free Restrooms; David looked into the cost of the scent free restrooms and labor. Motion censor switch, faucet & fan. Eliminate the automatic scent dispenser. David will continue to gather information. DBTACS Legislation; Committee could compose a statement to be sent out to Washington D.C. or to Sen. Johnson, Herseth and Thune. Comments and suggestions should be made to Kurt by Monday. Special Olympics; May 18-20, 2006 in Brookings. Looking for Donors to fund the event. Budget of $29,800.00. Contact information to the individuals who are organizing. Committee can volunteer time, etc, to Special Olympics. NDEAM; Transition training and a luncheon with a speaker. Lisa asked the committee for $500.00 donation. Education for Professionals in the School; Identifying early signs of mental illness in young teens. Provide an inservice for teachers. Resources available for the transitioning of students. ADA Coordinator's Report: Front Street/Depot Parking; Still in progress! Liquor Store; In Progress! Doors Open Event; Nancy will explore this further. New SDSU Wellness Center; City must review and approve the plans of accessibility. Nancy is working on designing an accessible wellness center.
