Proiect Updates/Reviews:
Update Emergency Preparedness/Response Program. The subcommittee has not
met yet (Shari, Lisa ft Nancy). Thornes reported that Dennis Falken, City Manager,
made a formal request to Steve Meyer, Brookings Municipal Utilities General Manager,
asking that BMU save space in the Brookings telephone book government "blue
pages" for the emergency registry program. Falken has also briefed the new city
manager on the committee and its programs.
• Governor's Awards. Thornes expressed concern that the nominations are due and
she hadn't seen copies of the forms. In the past the Committee was the signer of
all nominations and submitted all of them to the state.
• Central Museum. Cogswell sent a letter to Dale Larson offering ADA review
assistance on the museum. He received a phone call from Mr. Larson indicating that
the accessibility issues were being covered by his daughter, his architect and
Thornes. Thornes noted that her involvement in the project was from a historic
preservation aspect and not accessibility. Thornes will call the architect to clarify.
• ADA Leadership Network. Cogswell participated in a teleconference on behalf of
Thornes. He noted that the renewal reports are due by December 31'. Nancy asked
for clarification on who is a member of the network: Thornes or the entire
Committee?
• National ADA Symposium Attendance. A $500 stipend is available from the
Network for those wishing to attend. Registration starts on January 8th. The
workshop will be May 12-14, 2008 in St. Louis. Thornes is planning to attend.
Hartenhoff-Crooks attended this conference in 2006.
• Update Brochure. Bennett and Sonnenburg are planning to update the brochure
with new employee and employer stories. A full re -write and printing will be
planned for summer 2008. If funds are available, the Committee will have additional
copies of the current brochure printed before year-end.
• SDSU Performing Arts Center Parking. Kornbaum noted that there are currently
four (4) accessible parking spots at the SDSU Performing Arts Center. Due to the
nature of the audiences (older than general population), she expressed concern that
more spaces maybe needed. Hartenhoff-Crooks will approach SDSU Traffic and
Parking Committee with this suggestion.
• Post Office. The accessible ramp entrance has been removed and is currently under
construction. The Committee expressed concern that the holiday season was
probably the worst time to remove access. Thornes will contact the Post Master to
inquire on the project schedule.
ADA Coordinator's Report.
• City Manager - Jeffrey W. Weldon started with the City on December 12`n
• Transportation Board - The City Council recently took action to create a new board -
Brookings Transportation Board. The Board will provide oversight and evaluation of
the coordinated transportation efforts in the community and provide advice to the
City Council. The thirteen member board also includes one voting member from this
committee. Names need to be submitted to the Mayor by January 11 cn
• City Clerk's Office - Thornes announced that her department was funded to hire an
additional staff person. The title of the new position is "Receptionist/ Records
Clerk." A job offer has been made and accepted. The new employee will start mid
January.
• Mayor's Christmas Party. Thornes thanked the committee members for attending
the Mayor's reception.
Election of Officers. A motion was made by Kornbaum, seconded by Hartenhoff-
